Family-Placed Death Notice
Joseph Homer Allen, 84, born and raised at 401 Cherokee Place in Grant Park, died September 11, 2004 in Decatur, Alabama. Mr. Allen's roots in Atlanta pre-date the Civil War. He served in WWII, later working on the ramp to the C-130 at Lockheed before being designated a Charter Member by NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, where he worked on projects ranging from the Nike missile to the Hubble Telescope. He was a Scoutmaster. During the 1960's Mr. Allen volunteered with the U.S. Justice Department to assit in protecting the recently attained right to vote for minorities and the poor in the South, risking personal harm. Survivors include his wife, Mary Horton Allen and four children, Terry Joseph Stewart of Boca Raton, FL; Joseph David Allen of Owens-Crossroads, AL; Anthony Wayne Allen of Decatur, Alabama and Andrea Muriel Allen of Tucker, GA; He leaves 4 grandchildren. The funeral and burial will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, at Roselawn Funeral Home in Decatur, Alabama.
