Family-Placed Death Notice

Joseph Richard McDermott, Jr., 56, of Tarpon Springs, FL, known to friends as Rich, passed away unexpectedly on Easter, March 31, 2013. He is the beloved son of Jeanne Waters Pittman and the late Joseph Richard McDermott, Sr. He is also survived by sister Julia, brother Michael, stepfather, R. Clinton Pittman, MD, extended family and numerous friends. Born in St. Pete, FL, and raised in Atlanta, Rich graduated from Druid Hills HS in '74, attended Emory at Oxford College where he joyously played guitar alongside Tinsley Ellis in the Haygood Band, and earned a BS in Aeronautical Engineering from Embry-Riddle in '85. He worked as a loving caregiver to his stepfather, which inspired his pursuit of an AS in Human Services. Rich is fondly remembered for his irresistible smile, fun-loving disposition, and shared words of kindness, which he conveyed as a talented singer/songwriter with several recordings to his credit. His family will celebrate his love of life and music with a private butterfly release and a spreading of his ashes at his favorite fishing holes and inspirational spots in nature.
