Family-Placed Death Notice

BATES, Lois Lois Bates completed a long and family oriented life on Sunday morning, Dec. 2, 2012, peacefully, and in her home at Stone Mountain. Lois spent her entire life in Georgia, being born in Lithonia on Aug. 16, 1929, reared on a farm with 10 brothers and sisters, and attending local Lithonia schools. After high school she met her future husband and love of her life Forrest Bates, their first date at the county fair, being introduced by lifelong friends Thornton and Henrietta Cowan. Lois and Forrest married at the Methodist parsonage in Covington in March of 1948, and were completely devoted to each other for 54 years until Forrest's death in 2002. Lois leaves two daughters to cherish lifelong memories: Sheila Clendening and her husband Brett from Griffin, and Karen Smith and her husband Dean from Stone Mountain. In addition to being a dedicated wife and mother, she loved 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, who will remember Nan's affection and wonderful cooking. After rearing her daughters Lois began a career with AT&T, retiring still young so she and Forrest could enjoy carefree and good times together in Mountain City. Lois was an active member of the Embry Hills Church of Christ, and was an avid seamstress, enjoying all types of sewing and needle crafts. Sheila and Karen invite friends and family to visit with them at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 3150 Lawrenceville Hwy., in Tucker, Georgia, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, with the service immediately following at noon. They ask in lieu of flowers that donations be sent in Lois's honor to the . Floral Hills Funeral Home & Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
