PAGET, Jr., Manchester Manchester Carroll "Ben" Paget,age 87, prominent educator and civic leader of Jackson, GA passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Spalding Regional Medical Center in Griffin. He was born in Fulton County, GA October 5, 1926 son of the late M. C. Paget, Sr. and Alice Ainsley Paget. He was married to Frances Smith Paget for over 57 years prior to her death October 27, 2006. Ben served in the US Army of Occupation in Germany following WWII
. His unit arrived at Hitler's bunker shortly after Hitler committed suicide. Over a twenty plus year period including the Army and National Guard, he rose to the rank of Lt. Col. Ben taught in the Atlanta Public Schools for a while and served as Commandant of cadets at Gordon Military College in Barnesville for several years until 1957. He has been very active in the Gordon College Alumni Association. He served as principal of Jonesboro High School from 1957-1962, principal of Bremen High School from 1962-1969 and principal of Jackson High School for several years beginning in 1969. He served as Assistant Supt. of the Butts County School system, retiring around 1990. Ben was very active in religious and civic affairs, being a member of the Jackson First Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher as well as other capacities. He was a former member of the Jackson Kiwanis Club, member of the Jackson Rotary Club
and served on various other boards. He was President of the Butts County Retired Teachers, member of both the National Education Association and the Georgia Education Association. He served for several years on the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges. Funeral services for Ben Paget will be Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 4:00PM at the First Baptist Church in Jackson. Interment will be in the Jackson City Cemetery.
