I am deeply saddened by the passing of Harry Wadsworth, a genuine person and a dear friend whom I had known since 1970. Harry and I co-taught several short courses to people in industry when we both worked at Georgia Tech. I enjoyed working with Harry on that and also enjoyed our other interactions. Irene, I know you were appreciative of my work in nominating Harry for Fellow of the American Statistical Association and getting him elected. I was glad to do it. Justice prevailed, and you know what I mean by that.
My sincere condolences to his family.

He was a true master in his professional field and personal life; beloved by all who knew him and admired by all he worked with. He saw the best and worst of the 20th century, from the Depression, to fighting the Japanese, to the rise of computing power, and worked to help people in nearly every country on earth. On top of all that, he could do complex multiplication in his head while raising a successful family. His legacy is uniquely strong. We will live to honor him. I'm sure he would agree that the world beautiful and filled with such love and moral depth, that when we lose a loved one, no one is served by dwelling on the little things that make up the struggle of every day living--including coping with loss. It is far better, in our moment of acute vulnerability, to look death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides. I cherish every moment I shared with my grandfather. He was a terrific story reader, always switching from narrator voice to character voice. I can still hear his voice reading me the "Just So Stories," and convincing me that they were really true. Sometimes I still wonder if the rhino really has wrinkled, armored skin from struggling with anger management. As I got older I did my best to follow his example of working hard always and never complaining about things I cannot change. It's fitting that he fell ill doing what he was so good it. I will miss him terribly and will do my best to continue his legacy.
