Lovic BROOKS Obituary

BROOKS, Jr., Lovic LOVIC ALTON BROOKS, JR. Lovic Alton Brooks, Jr. died peacefully Monday, July 14, 2014, following a short illness. He was surrounded by his family at his home at Saint George Village, Roswell, GA. He was a devoted family man, loyal friend, esteemed attorney, and avid golfer. A Memorial Service and Celebration of his Life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2014, at Roswell United Methodist Church Chapel, with Dr. Harvey West officiating. A reception will follow at the church. A 9:30 a.m. graveside service at Arlington Memorial Park will precede the memorial service. Pallbearers will be his three grandsons and three sons-in-law. The family will receive visitors from 4 until 8 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014 at H.M. Patterson & Son-Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Road NE, Sandy Springs, GA. Mr. Brooks was born April 5, 1927 in Savannah, GA to the late Lovic Alton Brooks and Margaret Haley Brooks and raised in Anderson, SC. He was a life-long Methodist and found a new church home at Roswell Untied Methodist Church when he and his wife moved to Saint George Village in 2010. He had been very active in the early years of St. James United Methodist, where he developed a lifelong friendship with Dr. Robert Ozment. He attended The Citadel until 1945 when he enlisted in the Navy to serve this country that he loved so much. He served in leadership positions in the Pacific. Following World War II, he completed his education at The Citadel and then pursued his lifelong dream to become a lawyer. He graduated second in his class from University of South Carolina School of Law. While in general practice in Anderson he served in the South Carolina Legislature. In 1959, Mr. Brooks became a senior trial attorney with the National Labor Relations Board in Atlanta. After a year he joined the Atlanta law firm now known as Constangy, Brooks & Smith where he served as Chairman of the Executive Committee for over two decades. The firm is one of the oldest in the U.S. that devotes its entire practice to labor and employment law. Mr. Brooks initiated expansion of the firm to offices throughout the United States representing clients in all 50 states and virtually all major industries. He served on boards of NYSE and NASDAQ companies and as General Counsel to the Rug and Carpet Institute. He was a sought out motivational speaker at seminars addressing employee motivation and promoting positive employee relationships and also was frequently asked to speak at colleges and universities. He was extremely honored when asked to submit papers of his labor campaigns to the Smithsonian Institute. Mr. Brooks loved golf and was a serious competitor. He enjoyed opportunities to play golf throughout the US and in Scotland but loved his home courses in Atlanta and Highlands, NC. He was an annual participant in The Crosby Celebrity Amateur tournament, winning it once and placing several other times. He was former president of the Atlanta Golf Classic Foundation and proud to have won the pro-am one year. He was a long time member of the GA Judicial Invitational Golf Classic, was co-founder of the SC Judicial Invitational, and assisted with the formation of the NC Judicial Invitational. Though very active professionally and socially, Mr. Brooks was most committed to and proud of his large, loving family gathering them often at his homes in Atlanta and Highlands and on numerous vacations. He was a resident of Sandy Springs for 50 years prior to moving to Roswell. He is survived by his wife and love of his life for 66 years Carrie Alice Jenkins Brooks and their five children, Margaret Brooks Kelley (Lynn) of Tifton, GA, Debbie Brooks Keller (Tom) of Nashville, TN, Lovic A. Brooks, III (Nancy) of Columbia, SC, Alice Brooks Bowen of Marietta, GA, Susan Brooks Pitts (Larry) of Roswell, GA, fourteen grand- children, fourteen great grand- children and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He is preceded in death by his daughter Catherine Brooks and three siblings, Dan W. Brooks, Shirley Brooks Hildebrand and Terry M. Brooks. His family would like to thank the many friends who have visited, called and expressed love and support, and to his devoted caretakers. Deeply grateful for his many blessings, Mr. Brooks contributed generously to many organizations throughout his life. Contributions in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choosing. H.M.
