Jerry Church Obituary

CHURCH, Jerry Anderson Jerry Anderson Church, 78, of Amelia Island, FL and Atlanta, GA, passed away on June 17, 2015. He was born in Valdese, NC on February 24, 1937 to John G. Church and Clara Pritchard Church. After his childhood in Valdese, Jerry attended North Carolina State University, graduating with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He worked at Douglas Aircraft Company for two years and then entered the US Navy's aviation program. Following his Navy service, Jerry flew for Delta Airlines for 30 years until he retired as a Captain in 1997. Jerry loved his flying career and often regaled his family and friends with fascinating Navy and Delta anecdotes. For many years, when not flying, Jerry was sailing. He, his children and friends sailed widely throughout Biscayne Bay and the Caribbean and up the Intra-coastal Waterway to Chesapeake Bay and New York. Sailing his boat into the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration in New York Harbor was one of his best-loved trips. Upon retirement, Jerry focused on his two favorite activities: travel and learning. In 18 years, he and his girlfriend, then wife, Linda, explored six of the seven continents. They hiked, drove, flew, biked, rode trains and cruised to enjoy the world's beauty, history and diversity. When not traveling, Jerry was learning. Whether it was science, history, economics or genealogy, he was constantly researching on-line, reading a book or watching an educational DVD. Jerry will be remembered most for his kindness, welcoming smile and loving heart. He was devoted to his family, spending many months caring for his parents in their final years. Always generous with his time, knowledge and affection, Jerry was a loyal and steadfast friend. Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Linda Stone, his son, Scott Church of Lakeport, CA, his daughter, Sarah (Chuck) Israel of Miami, FL, his adored grandsons, Austin and Cameron Gray of Miami, FL, his sister and brother-in-law, Gwen and Sam Eason of Orange Park, FL, his uncle, C. Willard Church of Valdese, NC, and his mother-in-law, Charlotte Smithloff of Atlanta, GA. He also leaves three nieces and several cousins who were very dear to him. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Jerry was a very dear friend of mine. I remember going with Jerry on part of his trip on the sailboat to New York. Jerry was so kind to me and was the one who took me to a No-Smoking clinic (which worked) He was determined to get me to quit smoking. His parents, John and Clara, were like my parents. My how they loved Jerry.

Right after Joe and I married, Jerry came down to Gulf Breeze and helped me hang all of my art work and set up my new home. Such a sweet friend. He and Linda came down for a visit which we really enjoyed.

Jerry and I continued to be friends until he passed away. I really miss him.

We love Jerry so much, he was so kind to me while taking care of my parents Thomas W. Griever and Amy E. Griever. Thomas always had such wonderful stories of his childhood with Jerry. Jerry always made time to stop and see them during the holidays ,it meant a lot to my parents. When I came to Florida nearly 4 years ago to care of them, Jerry and Linda helped me alot. I wondered when they would be back again but I knew they had travel plans, just thought he was enjoying his life as he did so well, I regret not being a little nosier and I may have not been this late in sending my condolences. I know he is in heaven with my daddy. Both were good men and I imagine Jerry with that bright smile . He sure was a gentleman, one ill never forget. With my sincere regrets on this late note and with deepest sympathy ... My our Lord watch over all of you

I was in Jerry's Valdese High School Class of 1955. Jerry flew for the Navy and Delta, and i flew for the Air Force. We had long flying careers and we we shared many great stories over the years. Jerry was a brilliant and colorful kind of guy, and we were best friends.

So sorry for your loss. Jerry and I were in the same new hire class with Delta in 1967. We were also assigned to Miami as our 1st base and lived near each other. We later flew out of different bases so didn't see each other as often but we were always good friends. May he rest in Peace!
