Joan ALLEN Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

ALLEN, Joan Joan W. Allen, 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday January 4, 2014 after an extended illness. She was born in Wakefield, Massachusetts on August 6, 1934 to Robert J and Lucy P Wheaton. She and Neal M. Allen were married on April 4, 1959. She was a loving and devoted mother to Tracy L Allen and Elena A Cass, enthusiastic grandmother to McKala G Cass and Camryn C Cass. She graduated from the Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing in New Hampshire and worked for several years in pediatrics at the New York Hospital before becoming the full time mother to her two daughters. She was active in the community, being a Director of the Indian Hills Civic Association, a Director of the Juvenile Research Foundation Georgia Chapter, and member of the Indian Hills Garden Club. When her daughters were old enough, she worked as the Bookkeeper at The Eastside Elementary School in Cobb County. Her charitable interests were considerable, being active and supportive of Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta, the above mentioned JDRF, Humane Society of Blue Ridge and the Salvation Army as well as numerous other National and local organizations. She was an avid reader and enjoyed drama and musicals on the stage as well as on film and TV. Her first interest though was always her family and her many friends. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 13, 2014 from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm at H.M. Patterson & Son Canton Hill Chapel. A funeral service will be on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at 11:30am at Holy Innocent's Episcopal Church, Sandy Springs, GA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Joan's memory to either the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, www.jdrf.org, 3525 Piedmont Rd NE, Bldg. 6 Ste 300, Atlanta GA 30305 or Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, ATTN: Gift Processing , 1577 NE Expressway, Suite A , Atlanta, GA 30329 www.choa.org. Dear Neal and Family,
I just learned of Joan's passing and was very sad to hear that news. I have read the other entries in the guest book and found myself nodding in agreement as I read them. I have very fond memories of my conversations with her on those special occasions when we spent time together. She was easy to chat with, funny, and never failed to ask how my son and even my ex-husband were doing (she found him charming). There was always a kind word spoken and a big smile shared when she was near. I know you will miss her dearly. I am sorry I will not be able to attend her service tomorrow, but I will be thinking of you all when the time comes around.

I will miss Joan very much, although I didn't see Joan & Neal but once a year or so when I decorated their house for Christmas it was as if we saw each other every week. I loved Joan's straight forwardness and the fact that she told it like it was. I will miss the little talks we had and hearing about how the family was doing. There is not enough words to describe what she meant to me and how she was always more concerned about how you were doing. I am thinking of you Neal, Tracy, Elena and those grandchildren she was so proud of. All my love, Brad Perkerson

We were so sorry to hear of Joan's passing. Our heartfelt sympathies! We have many fond memories of Joan and Neal when they visited here in Maine. Joan had a great sense of humor and fun which she often shared with us. An example is my Tennessee Vols tee shirt, which NOW will become a cherished possession.
We can't be with you so we'll send hugs from afar.
With Love, Jeannine & Kenny

We have such fond memories of Joan. Let is be said that she was a pistol of a woman and one we admired. Her sense of humor is one that we still see in her daughters. She will be sadly missed. Much love to the family.

We have met only several women the caliber of Joan. Our friend Betty Mae has passed and we will miss Joan for the same reasons. She was a unique woman who welcomed everyone and showed interest and caring for those she embraced. She could make anybody feel at home and at ease. You new she was capable of organizing and accomplishing anything that was put before her and would make the task enjoyable. At the same time, you knew she had a strong opinion and personal fortitude that she would share at the right moment. Conversation always came easy and included all. We know by her stories that her her history of giving and volunteering will leave a gap in the lives of many. Our memories will always be dominated by her fun spirit and broad smile.

The entire family will be in our thoughts and prayers. I only hope those "good genes" for fun live on through the family and maybe even rub off on those of us that are fortunate enough to be around you. She is now giggling with the angles and planning the next function!
