Family-Placed Death Notice
FONSECA, Marco MARCO TULIO FONSECA Mr. Marco Tulio Fonseca age 64 of La Lima Honduras passed away on Wednesday evening July 13th 2011. In the middle of a banana plantation on July 2nd 1947, Marco was born. Although officially born June 27th, because of the dirt roads and long distance, his father and mother were not able to travel to register him on his birthday. He would say his greatest accomplishment was meeting his wife, having his three children, and providing for his mother. He was the fourth child of 11 children, and the first to graduate with a university degree. Born into extreme poverty in Central America, he used his first paycheck to buy the first home for his family, which is their home still today. He valued education, diversity and cultural understanding and was a very strong advocate for identifying and providing learning opportunities, especially for those with limited resources. Despite his humble start, he went on to graduate from Cornell University with an undergraduate degree in Agriculture, and Masters in Horticulture from UC Davis. Through the Peace Corps, he met his wife and spent many years working with volunteers in Honduras. Also, he worked several years with Honduras Outreach promoting sustainable agriculture in rural areas. He was most happy teaching people about gardens, the joys of pruning, and unending benefits of composting. He was a "glass half-full" individual with a generous heart and giving spirit. He has been with the UGA community for 20 years. He made Griffin his home setting roots on the UGA Griffin Campus. Every person who ever met him would say he was always happy, social and generous. His house was a reflection of his life. There are plants, flowers and vegetables all year around-a cornucopia of species somehow fitting in perfectly in his yard. His happiest times were when his family and friends filled his home on weekends and holidays. He never tired of learning, teaching and new experiences. Marco is survived by his wife of 40 years - Terry, his eldest daughter Carolyn, middle child Susan and son-in-law Bruce, his son Michael and daughter-in-law Amy, grandkids Isabella and Evan, his 90 year-old mother Trinidad, and siblings Edgardo, Agusto, Hortencia, Rogelio, Miriam, Henry, Aminta, Armando, and Deysi. He was a beloved husband, father, son and brother. A memorial service for Marco will be held on Thursday, July 21st at 11:00am, at the Pavilion on the University of Georgia Griffin Campus. The family welcomes all family, friends and co-workers to attend. Mrs. Fonseca and her children are grateful to Dean Arkin and the Griffin community for celebrating Marco's life at the Griffin Campus, a place he loved so much. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation in his name to fund a student scholarship (donation can be made out to "The UGA Foundation" for Marco T. Fonseca Scholarship Fund, UGA Griffin Campus Business Office, 1109 Experiment Street, Griffin GA 30223).

hace un año y en una fecha como hoy que no quisieras recordar un angel mas subio al cielo un dia como hoy mi hermano regreso al lugar donde pertenece porrque los angeles como el solo estan en este mundo prestados por alguna razon nos duele mucho saber que hace un año ya no estas fisicamente con nosotros pero no en nuestros corazones y que cada dia nos acompañasm asi como cada dia al salir de mi casa pido a dios su proteccion y bendicion le pido a mi angelito que interceda por cada miembro de mi familia y se que lo haces, como siempre estuvistes pendiente de esta familia, gracias Marco nos haces mucha mucha falta y te extrañamos, pero al ver tu foto que permanece en la sala de mi casa y verla vemos esa hermosa sonrisa que siempre dabasy parece que nso estas miranndo nos recuerda que estas en el lugar que debes estar porque los angeles pertenecen al cielo, pero nos dejastes tu ejemplo tu amor,m esa serenidad y la humildad que te caraterizaba y la entrga desinteresada asi los demas, GRACIAS HERMANITO POR ESTAR SIEMPRE CON NOSOTROS NO TE OLVIDAMOS SOLO NOS DUELE NO VERTE TE EXTRAÑAMOS MUCHO MUCHO PERO SABEMOS QUE SIGUES DESDE EL CIELO CUIDANDONOS TE AMO Y TE EXTRAÑO MUCHO AMINTA

hace un año y en una fecha como hoy que no olvidaremos nunca pero que no quisieramos que hubiera pasado , un angel mas llego al cielo no entendemos todavia que paso y nos duele mucho mucho que marco fisicamente ya no este con nosotros, pero cada dia que salgo de mi casa y pido bendicion y prteccion para mi en la calle y toda mi familia le pido a mi hermanito que interceda por cada uno de nosotros, se que voy en su compañia, y al ver esa foto que esta en la sala de la casa, veo tu sonrisa y tu cara preciosa y tu serenidad ypareciera que nos estan viendo y tengo la plena conviccion que estas en un lugar mejor y que como siempre lo hicistes nos estas cuidando y que fisicamente no estas pero siempre siempre estas con nosotros y te recordamos y amamos y que algun dia entenderemos que habia un proposito para que te fueras al cielo y como alguien me dijo un dia hemanito no eras de este mundo solo estabas prestado porque los angeles como tu deben estar en el cielo y al cielo te envio este mensaje y te digo GRACIAS MARCO TE AMAMOS, TE EXTRAÑAMOS PERO POR ESE EJEMPLO DE VIDA DE HUMILDAD ENTREGA Y AMOR A LOS DEMAS QUE NOS DEJASTES SEGUIMOS ADELANTE TE EXTRAÑO MUCHO MUCHO HERMANITO

Terri and family, it has been many years since I knew Marco from Honduras Outreach, summer of 1991, I believe. I was deeply influenced by him and so appreciate how he took me under his wing to travel to the local communities when no one else wanted to leave "the ranch." I went on to work/live many years in northern Guatemala and became a cultural anthropologist and now teach International Development at Clark University. His manner, participatory philosophy, and sense of humor were all deeply influential in my vision of what a good development worker should be.
My condolences for your loss. Marco touched many lives.

MARCO TULIO FONSECA
“ESE HOMBRE ESPECIAL”
Desde que lo recuerdo, lo veo con sus alas majestuosas, abiertas a la búsqueda del triunfo, luchando por ser cada día mejor, luchó intensamente y triunfó; sin olvidar ni dejar de amar su nido, … su familia,… la tierra que lo vio nacer.
Aunque su vuelo lo llevó lejos, siempre volvió a lo suyo,… a los suyos.
Marco fue una persona especial para toda nuestra familia, siempre afectuoso, con esa expresión serena; recto en su proceder, honrado en todo sentido, con un alto grado de responsabilidad en todos los desempeños como persona y como profesional; por donde pasó dejó huellas profundas, imperecederas.
Siempre con esa su sonrisa característica de un hombre bueno y feliz.
Valoró la vida, apreció los logros, disfrutó su familia, su trabajo, estableció buenos lazos con sus amistades.
Marco pasó por esta vida siendo una persona especial: un excelente hijo, amoroso, siempre pendiente y preocupado por sus padres a quienes amó y respetó.
Un hermano ejemplar, que solo quería que todos camináramos hacia el éxito y la felicidad.
Un esposo fiel, dedicado a su esposa a quien en todo momento amó, respetó, le cumplió sus deseos, la acompañó.
Un padre único, modelo, con ese don innato y de vocación de maestro supo educar muy bien a sus hijos los cuales hoy, triunfadores, dignifican su nombre.
El verdadero abuelo, orgulloso de sus nietos, sus peluditos, admirando sus hazañas; el cuenta cuentos nato, el inventor de historias fantásticas que entretuvieron a sus hijos y muy después a sus nietos, quienes lo llenaron de felicidad.
Siempre disfrutó, se entusiasmó y se preocupó por los cipotes, su peludita, sus pitufitos.
Marco supo valorar en el verdadero sentido el significado de familia
Aunque triunfo en ese gran país al que le agradeció las oportunidades para salir adelante, nunca olvidó ni dejó de querer, ni extrañar a su país, a esta tierra que lo vio nacer, a las tortillas de su madre, hechas con el maíz que nuestro campesino sembró; ese campesino, esa yunta de bueyes que siempre estuvieron en su mente y que disfrutaba, como una imagen permanente de su origen del cual siempre se sintió orgulloso, y puso en alto en cualquier lugar.
Aun en su lecho de enfermo pidió su café, sus rosquillas y los frijoles hondureños.
Cada vez que venía a Honduras era para estar con sus seres queridos, sobre todo con nuestra madre, pero también para traer los últimos conocimientos y ayuda para nuestra agricultura, con los proyectos de extensión de la Universidad para la cual laboraba.
La universidad Georgia, su personal lo llegaron a valorar y querer por ser esa “persona especial” que todos conocieron y quisieron, en su memoria y honrando su persona se sembrará un árbol que no me queda la menor duda se erguirá frondoso, buscando el cielo y el sol como fue la vida de Marco, siempre hacia el éxito, pero con sus raíces bien ubicadas.
Hoy somos muchos los que lloramos su partida. Aunque sabemos que fue bien recibido en la casa del cielo.
Hoy su vuelo fue más alto, hacia la eternidad; dócilmente plegó sus alas y sin mucho ruido se acurrucó al lado del Padre Celestial.
“Con ese don especial iluminaste nuestras vías, vivirás eternamente entre nosotros. “

Several years ago Marco asked me to assist with the editing of the sixth edition of "The Georgia Master Gardener Handbook". It was quite an honor to be asked and more of an honor to work in the company of such a happy,kind,giving and brilliant man. Such a man is rare and he will be greatly missed.

It was with much sadness that I heard of Dr. Fonseca's. His warm smile and great personality always made it a pleasure to work with him. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him and I wish his family the best in the future.
