Phil Walden Obituary

Georgia music impresario Phil Walden, 66, has died of cancer, according to Tom Johnson, a longtime family friend and retired CNN chairman.

Walden had a life as turbulent as rock 'n' roll itself. He careened from wealth to bankruptcy, from hard living to sobriety, from relevance to obscurity and back again.

He dabbled in film, and his benefit concerts decades ago helped elect Jimmy Carter president, but he was first and foremost a musical kingmaker.

He discovered Otis Redding, and then, after the soul titan died in a plane crash, went on to found Macon-based Capricorn Records and launch the Allman Brothers Band. He endured the bankruptcy of his label, a falling out with the Allmans, rumors of mob connections and a serious substance abuse problem, yet still managed to resurrect Capricorn in Nashville and find new success with Southern-fried jam band Widespread Panic.

Though he lived a controversial life, he received accolades until the end. In February, the Georgia House of Representatives adopted a resolution honoring and commending Walden "for his outstanding achievements in the music industry and his many contributions to the welfare of this state and nation." The resolution called Walden "a true son of the South."

Legendary Atlanta concert promoter Alex Cooley, who knew Walden for almost 40 years, said earlier this year that Walden should have a phoenix tattooed on his body: "He's bounced back more times than anybody I know."

Check back for more details on Walden and his funeral arrangements.

I first met Phil Walden when he was in school at Mercer University. He was booking bands for fraternity parties and local small functions and indeed a hard working young man.
After getting to know him i wrote his first life insurance policy .
I moved from Macon to New Orleans , La to establish my agency there and eventually lost contact with Phil but learned of his hard working success through friends.
Phils successful rise did not suprise me because he was a very dedicated and hard working young man.
One of the Allman brothers was on the. Country music awards show tonight and it made me think of Phil so i googled him to learn not only of his death in 06 but his sons thus year.
God Bless Phil his son and all of his loved ones and thank all of you in Macon, Ga for making my earlier years so memorable.
Rest in peace Phil and thanks for the memories.

Thank you Phil...for being a great friend to Southern Rock and to us all. Thank you for recognizing the fact that great bands do not just come out of New York and L.A. Your musical vison that you pioneered put pride back in the south and gave many young bands in and around Florida and Georgia the hope that they also stood just as good a chance as everyone else. Rest in peace knowing that Southern Rock is alive and well and Capricorn and your legacy will go on forever. Peace and God bless.

To the family, rest well in knowing we will all see our brother again. Phil made such an impact on this and many other musicians lives. Like it was said earlier from Grinder Switch, you made it possible for just an old Georgia boy to be something else. The night we were on that stage at the Agora Ballroom, you told me to act like ive done a million times.. God bless you brother Phil

Though I never met Mr. Walden I did correspond with him briefly over the phone and through the mail about my music. He listen to it and said he liked it. Then he proceeded to send me a hand written letter containing some very inspirational advice. I found him to be most polite and a true southern gentleman. I will always be greatfull for his time. Yes sir the road certainally does go on forever!

To All the Family - I have great memories of the times I spent in Macon - my times at the studio, Grant's, Le Carousel, late nights, BBQ, the club on Cotton and just talkin' to Phil, Alan and Frank from time-to-time. I think it's safe to say, we all had a great ride. What absolute joy. Bless your family.

Thanks for letting Duane Allman put together a six piece band instead of a three piece and thanks for putting up the money to support them when most music heavy weights said you would never get it back. The music of The Allman Brothers Band has been an important part of my life for the past 36 years, thanks to your vision and guts. Thanks also for all of the other great music, too.

May Gods Holy Spirit comfort your family in this time of grief.

Although I never personally met Phil Walden, the man profoundly affected my life for the last 37 years. Because of the foresight & the support of his vision of what Duane Allman contributed to the American musical landscape, life as we know it would not exist. I and countless others are indebted to this man. May he rest in peace, and his family be comforted by the love and admiration many have for him.

No one who ever met or knew Phil will ever forget him. He left his mark on this world but especially

here in Macon. I met Phil through a D.J., Dan Giddens of W.N.E.X. so many years ago and Dan is also gone.

Phil was his idea of a Wheeler Dealer! Dan had dreams of managing

different singers but never got anywhere with it as Phil did. There was D.J. Don Morton also gone, D.J.

Joe Mattherly and so many more. Those were the days of Bob Sagessie and Don King and not to leave out Skip Holmes and Wadley Thrash. Phil is certainly a legend, long to be remembered.God be with you, his family.

Peggy,

I have fond memories of being with you and Phil after y'all bought the place at Lake Sinclair from my Uncle Derry and Aunt Hazel Burns. We spent many quiet moments there with you -- and believe me, a quiet moment in those days was hard to come by!

You always said if Phil could live at the lake and never have to go to the office, that was as close to Heaven as he could get.

Now, we know better -- there is a higher place for people who love Lake Sinclair and all that it means.

I also recall the afternoon you came over to pick out the two puppies from my Husky Stasha's litter. You took one look at the largest puppy and named him "Bandit" You also chose another one and gave it to Toy and Abby Caldwell.

When I worked with him, Phil always stood by his word to me. I remember my days as a "Capricorn gopher", while I was a student at Mercer, as among the hardest-working but happiest, most carefree of my life.

Ann and I send our most heartfelt wishes to you and the entire family.

I will miss living in a world without Phil.

To Peggy, Phil, Jr., Amantha, Alan, Katherine & all the loved ones of Phil Walden...

As November approaches, I'll be looking forward to celebrating my 27th year as a cancer survivor. How blessed I am, but how saddened I was to receive the news Monday that Phil had lost his battle with this dreaded disease.

When you reflect on the life & career of Phil Walden, you are compelled to think of success & dedication. As the newspaper articles stated & are so true, he was a Southern rock pioneer & had truly become an icon for locals & music fans around the word. This is evidenced by over 16 pages of entries in the Macon Guest Book.

Love sees no color. It also looks beyond long hair & hippie clothing. Phil showed his love in countless ways. He believed & now we are still privileged to be listening to the incredible sounds of Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, Johnny Jenkins, the Allman Brothers Band, the Tucker boys, Wet Willie, Sea Level, Stillwater, Charlie Daniels, Lynyrd Skynyrd & the list could go on & on. Now, how could I offend all the "spread heads" & not mention Widespread Panic! And, for the "country" fans, Billy Joe Shaver, who I just recently heard in Milledgeville, & a favorite of so many, Hank Williams, Jr.

No one, including me, will forget what Phil Walden did for Macon. He loved our town so much that it was his wish, which was granted, to be interred here in historic Rose Hill.

Phil will live on in our memories & in our hearts. He will not be forgotten & perhaps one day, there will be a bridge, street or statue in his honor.

With sincere sympathy in the loss of one so dear -

I was 22 years old and working for WEA (Warner Elektra Atlantic Corp) at that time located off of Fulton Industrial Blvd in Atlanta and was asked to go have Bar-B-Q with Phil. The rock scene was still going pretty solid and I hair down to my belt. I was so thrilled when we got to the Bar-B-Q place for lunch Phil sat right beside me and made me feel real special. Phil was firing back up his label through WEA and looked liked a million bucks in his suit. During our lunch Phil was holding up a small cup of cole slaw to his mouth admiring how good it was. Phil then leaned into me and offered me a bite of his cole slaw off his fork. I don't like cole slaw and I politely passed. Phil replied in true southern form, "Don't know what your missing'". Phil will be missed by many. He was a true southern gentleman.

Particularly, to my personal friends, Alan and Tosha Walden: I say, take heart and carry on the Legacy of love and family spirit. I cut my teeth on Capricorn artists. As a youngun, the sounds of the Allmans and many others had such an affect on me. And some 35 years later, it's still the same. Thank God for the creative vision and ears for talent that Phil Walden was blessed with. Without that, there wouldn't have been the soulful ties that influenced people to get along. Music brings people together and the sounds and styles of what Mr. Walden helped to create have done just that, never to be repeated. Definitely meant to be. What an era!! I met Phil at the Ga. Hall of Fame grand opening and even though he was being pulled ten different directions, was very cool to me.

followed Phil's example and helped elect a President of the United States.

Since I never had the honor of meeting Phil Walden during his lifetime, it feels odd to sign this guest book, considering all the heartfelt personal messages left by those who knew him personally or professionally. However, to the extent my words may be of comfort to his family, I'm compelled to add my name to the long list of people worldwide whose lives were enriched by the music that Mr. Walden exposed us to. I grew up and still live on the Canadian prairies - a world away from Dixie, but the Walden stable of artists had a profound effect on my life and on the lives of many of my contemporaries. Over 30 years after having been recorded, many of the original Capricorn recordings are still the most frequently listened to items in my record collection. My humble thanks to Phil Walden for the joy this music has given me over the years. My condolences to the Walden family.

Pearl Stephens Elementary School, Lanier High School, Mercer University and Phi Delta Theta lost their second distinguished alumni in the past six months. My brother, George William (Bill) Johnson passed away in Atlanta on Octber 27, 2005. Bill and Phil were good friends from their early days at Peral Stephens and that friendship continued and grew at Lanier and Mercer. When I started at Mercer in 1962, there was no doubt which fraternity I wanted to join - and those two had everything to do with that decision. Kay and I have very fond memories of the high school dances and fraternity parties where Phil arranged the entertainment with performers like Otis Redding and Johnny Jenkins/the Pinetoppers. I believe that Phil and Bill have been reunited. Phil is still arranging the entertainment and Bill is still figuring how to pay for it. Our heart felt condolences go to Alan and the entire family.
