Family-Placed Death Notice

ABELN, Alice ALICE LEE ABELN Alice Lee Abeln, 81, affectionately known as Grannie and Missie, went to be with the lord as she peacefully passed away surrounded by loved ones on September 6, 2012. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all who were blessed to know her. She was the daughter of Kathleen and Claude Fernander of Nassau, Bahamas where she was born on April 6, 1931 and raised. She lived there for 21 years before meeting her husband Theodore "Ted" Abeln. They were married in Nassau at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on June 10, 1952 and recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. Alice went to beautician school in Toronto and was a beautician in Nassau before marrying Ted, a civil engineer serving in the Air Force when they married. After his discharge from the Air Force, they followed his engineering career in several southern cities including Jacksonville and Tampa FL, New Orleans, LA, Mobile, AL and Atlanta, GA. Along the way, they raised four children - Michael, Jeffrey, Susan and Tricia. Four wonderful marriages have produced 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She devoted her life to her husband and family as they were her primary focus. Alice was an enthusiastic gardener and maintained a beautiful yard full of flowers, plants and trees. She displayed beautiful artistic talent as evidenced by numerous oil paintings on the walls of her home and the homes of her family and friends throughout. She painted with her girlfriends once a week for many years. Alice was a friend to all who knew her and never met a stranger wherever she went. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 12 noon at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. The family will receive visitors from 10:30 - 12:00 preceding the mass. A reception will follow the mass at the church hall. A private burial will be held at Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Special Olympics of Georgia, www.specialolympics.org.
