Family-Placed Death Notice
Colonel (Ret.) Carl M. Abel, age 89 of Atlanta, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 5, 2006. A highly decorated Veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam, Col. Abel proudly served his country for 33 years in the United States Army. Among the highlights of his military career, he was a member of General George Patton's 3rd Army which fought its way across Europe during WWII. For his actions, Col. Abel received the Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal with V Device and three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart. Following WWII he served on General Douglas MacArthur's staff in Japan. As the Korean War began, he was assigned to that theater where he saw action in the Chosin Reservoir and Hamhung areas. Later he served as the Secretary of the General Staff for the Southeast Task Force (SETAF) in Italy. He served in Viet Nam as the Deputy Adjutant General for the US Military Assistance Command Viet Nam. He had multiple assignments at the Pentagon. When Col. Abel retired he was the Adjutant General of the 3rd United States Army at Fort McPherson, GA. Upon retirement from military service, he worked for Champion International for 13 years and continued to serve the community and the Armed Forces on the Board of Directors of the Interfaith Airport Chaplaincy at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and on the Chapel Council at Fort McPherson Post Chapel. Carl is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bernice, his daughter Pennie Abel-Hendrick, son-in-law James Hendrick, grandchildren Ashton Currie and SPC Jim Currie and niece and nephew Charlena and Duke Abel. Visitation will be at H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring and 10th Streets on Wednesday, August 9, 2006 from 6 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 10, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fort McPherson Post Chapel.
