1927 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
COCHRAN, Charles Charles Powell Cochran, 89, a native Atlantan died on Monday, the 28th of November, 2016. Son of the late R. Karl Cochran and Bennett Powell Cochran, he attended Atlanta Boys' High School and graduated from Georgia Tech Institute of Technology in the class of 1950. He was a member of the Omega Chapter of Chi Phi fraternity. During World War II he served in the United States Navy and served in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. Charlie joined the Lockheed Georgia Company, now Lockheed Martin, in early 1951. During his 36-year career, he carried out increasingly responsible assignments, including manager of customer training and field service, director of master scheduling, JetStar program director, assistant to the president and director of quality assurance and safety. He served on and led several industry committees including the Quality Assurance and Manufacturing committees of the Aerospace Industries Association. He was a Director of the Murdock Engineering Company of Irving, Texas, a Lockheed Martin subsidiary. He headed the operations functions at Lockheed Martin in Marietta from 1980 until his retirement as Vice President in February of 1987. Upon retirement, Charlie turned to volunteer work and woodworking. He became involved in leadership roles at the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church where he had been a member since 1956. He twice served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and served as Chairman of the Committee on Finance, Chairman of the Church Council and Chairman of the Staff/Parish Relations Committee among other positions held. He was also Vice President and Director of the Atlanta Boys' High School Alumni Association and volunteered with the Northside HospitalAtlanta Auxiliary. Charlie became an expert woodworker spending hours in the "shack" building furniture and toys for his grandchildren and beautiful crosses for the church, as well as cubbies for the preschool classrooms. He was preceded in death by his wife, the love of his life of 57 years, June Harwell Cochran. Charlie is survived by his children, Dr. Charles P. Cochran, Jr, and wife Tara of Darien, Connecticut, and Kay Cochran Palmer and husband Ben of Atlanta, Georgia, and six grandchildren; Charles P. Cochran, III (Chad), Caroline Cochran, Christian Cochran, Colin Cochran, Ben Palmer, Jr. and Matt Palmer. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, the 2nd of December at one o'clock in the afternoon at Sandy Springs United Methodist Church with Reverend Thomas Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park after a reception in the Fellowship Hall at the Church. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that a memorial contribution be directed to Sandy Springs United Methodist Church, 86 Mt.
