Family-Placed Death Notice

JOYE, Clealand M. Clealand M. Joye, Jr., 82, of Atlanta, Georgia, died Thursday, October 6, 2011. He was born December 15, 1928 in Sumter County, South Carolina. He was graduated with distinction from the United States Naval Academy in 1952 and was awarded a Bachelors of Science degree. While at the Academy, he served as Business Manager of the 1952 annual yearbook, "Lucky Bag," and was privileged to present a personal copy to then president Harry S. Truman. After serving a commission at the Naval Flight School in Pensacola, Florida, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology and earned a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in 1959. At Georgia Tech, he was a member of Tau Beta Pi, an honorary academic association, and Chi Epsilon, a National Honorary Civil Engineering Fraternity. He had a long career as a project engineer in Atlanta spanning more than fifty years. His last employment was with C.P. Richards Company in Lithonia. He is survived by his wife, Charlsie Joye; daughters, Jennifer Matthews and her husband, Brian, of Atlanta; Courtney Marvil and her husband, Charles, of Atlanta; son, Clea Joye and his wife, Holly, of Atlanta; sister, Beverly Morrow and her husband, Reverend Bobby Morrow, of Gaffney, SC; brother, Benjamin Cuttino and his wife, Sandy, of Apple Valley, CA. Survivors also include four grandchildren, Charlie, Phipps, and Emma Marvil, and Lindsey Joye. A Memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, 1328 Peachtree Street, NE, Atlanta, GA, 30309 with Reverends Chris Moore-Keish and Bobby Morrow officiating. Burial will be Wednesday, October 12, 2011, with a graveside service at 2:00 p.m., The Sumter Cemetery, 700 West Oakland Avenue, Sumter, SC, 29150 with Reverend Bobby Morrow officiating. Anyone wishing to honor Clealand's life and his memory are invited to make a contribution to the American Cancer Society or Cancer Survivors' Fund, DeKalb Medical, 2701 North Decatur Road, Decatur, GA 30033.

Charlsie, I was totally shocked to see Clealand's obit in the AJC, mainly because we had shared emails up until just recently with no word of him being in ill health. My heart and sympathy goes out to you and your entire family. I have fond memories of him from many years past and remember what a kind and dear man he was.
