Family-Placed Death Notice

GUTHRIE, Colleen Colleen W. Guthrie succumbed to esophageal cancer after being diagnosed in July of this year. Colleen was born in Ellijay, Georgia on February 10, 1933. She was the youngest of six sisters and three brothers. Her beloved husband W.R. Guthrie preceded her in death. Colleen served in the US Navy Reserve and retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs after many years. She volunteered more than 15 years at the Atlanta History Center. She was an avid sportsperson, excelling in golf (6 holes in one) and bowling (many trophies including State Champion). She was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Chattahoochee in Atlanta, GA where she was best friends with Hilda Clayton for over 60 years. 2 sisters survive her, Mary Withrow of Ellijay and Ruby Graham of Woodstock, as well as a stepgrandson, Michael Guthrie, and many nieces and nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews and friends. She is now at peace with her Lord. A graveside service will be held 11 am Wednesday, November 21 at Crest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Bernard Weaver officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm Tuesday, November 20 at the Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna.
