Family-Placed Death Notice

SMITH, Dr. Harry, Jr. Dr. Harry Vaughan Smith, Jr. 80, passed away on January 1. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret Ann Swann Smith, children Peggy Smith-Herbst of Mount Dora, FL, Dr. Harry V. Smith III of Mt. Pleasant SC, Betty Peterson of Omaha, NE, and James Michael Smith of Midlothian, VA, eight grand children, and a brother, Dr. Patton Smith of Forsyth, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. and Mrs. Harry V. Smith, Sr. of Forsyth, GA. Dr. Smith was born in Greensboro, GA and lived in Barnesville and Forsyth, where he graduated from Mary Persons High School. He attended Georgia Military College, received his B. S. and M. Ed. from Mercer University, and a Ph.D. from Florida State University. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served as a 1st lieutenant. He was a lifelong educator and began his career as math teacher at Hoke Smith High School in Atlanta, where he met his wife Margaret, the French teacher. He served as head of the Math Department at Southern Technical College in Marietta (now Southern Polytechnic State University), was an instructor at Georgia Tech, and later became Academic Dean at Broward Community College in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He was the founding president of a community college in Blytheville, Arkansas and retired as Chancellor of four community colleges in Illinois. After retiring, he and Margaret returned to Georgia and made their home in Waleska as well as in Suches, Georgia. He was a member of the Cherokee Community Chorale for several years. His lovely tenor voice could often be heard at Lake Arrowhead Chapel and the Church Without Walls at Lake Winfield Scott. A memorial service was held in Suches on January 5. He leaves behind a loving family and many treasured friends. Arrangements by the Cremation Society of Georgia 404- 355-7627
