Family-Placed Death Notice
GLEASON, J. Marne J. MARNE GLEASON J. Marne Gleason, 77, of Mableton, Georgia, an attorney and manufacturing and financial services executive died March 29 at home with his family. He was born in Detroit, Michigan September 9, 1935 and attended Michigan State University, where he served as Student Body President and was a member of the University President's Council and Michigan State Athletic Council. Mr. Gleason served in the United States Military for seventeen years as both a Seaman in the Navy and Officer in the Army. He attended Duke Law School and served as President of the Duke Bar Association and was a contributor to the Duke Law Review. Following Law School, he worked with the Wall Street Law Firm Donavon, Leisure, Newton & Irvine, representing Walt Disney's motion picture distribution company. During this time, he became a member of the Bar of the United States Supreme Court where he represented aircraft pioneer Howard Hughes in a case which clearly defined outlines regarding jurisdictional responsibilities of the Federal Aviation Administration. He had a notable legal career, serving as Corporate Counsel for the Avco Corporation and as Director of their Corporate Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action Programs. At that time, he was also President of the Carte Blanche Corporation, Avco's international credit card subsidiary. He was Vice President of Law and Government Relations at NL Industries and Unisys Corporation and the Chief Legal Officer of Scientific Atlanta. Mr. Gleason was active in civic organizations, serving as President of the Westchester Fairfield Corporate Counsel Association and as Chairman of the Policy Committee of the American Corporate Counsel Association. He was an active alumnus of Duke University and served as Vice Chairman of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Foundation and was a Fellow of the Duke Public Interest Law Consortium. He also instructed law courses in trial practice and legal systems in the Duke Law School and was a part of a Duke Law School team that participated in humanitarian legal dispute relief efforts in the Philippines. He enjoyed spending time with his family, drawing, restoring classic American cars, playing cards and completing crossword puzzles. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ellen Jane Gleason; children J. Marne Gleason and Sarah W. Gafner of Georgia, Stewart H. Gleason, Jane H. Gleason and M. Carolyn Biondi of New Jersey and his grandson Jack Eugene Gleason of Georgia. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 4 from 6-8 at H.M. Patterson and Son-Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Rd NE Atlanta, GA 30319. On Friday, a Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta.
