Family-Placed Death Notice

MARTIN, Janet Janet Lee Cutshaw Martin, 67, Oxford, Ga., died Tuesday, June 11, 2013, in Abbey Hospice after a yearlong illness. A native of Elizabethton, Tenn., Ms. Martin was a daughter of Jay M. and Margaret T. Cutshaw. She was a retired counselor from Heritage High School and the Rockdale County School System. Ms. Martin graduated from the Training School in Johnson City, Tenn.; held a bachelor's degree in English from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn.; and a master's in counseling from Georgia State University. While at ETSU, she was very active and an officer in Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and was a sweetheart of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. After graduating from ETSU, Ms. Martin moved to the Atlanta area, where she resided until her death. Early in her career, she taught high school English in Dekalb County Schools and later taught gifted classes and was a substitute counselor at Edwards Middle School. Ms. Martin also worked at Martin Tire Co., Lithonia, for about a decade in the 1980s as the financial manager and at Thompson & Sweeny, P.C., in Lawrenceville. She concluded her career at Heritage High School, retiring in 2011. Ms. Martin was a voracious reader and avid bridge player, but her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandson, James. She also loved to travel to the beach and "home" to the mountains. Ms. Martin was preceded in death by her parents, in 2009, and by a brother-in-law, David Martin in 2004. Survivors include: a son and daughter-in-law, Jay William and Heather Martin, Oxford; two sisters, Jayne Cutshaw Harper and husband, Rudy, Fairfield Glade, Tenn., and Lisa Cutshaw, Johnson City; one grandson, James William Martin, Oxford; one niece, Robin Paige Harper, Atlanta; two nephews, Brian Harper and wife, Christie, of Smyrna, Ga., and Joel Blake of Johnson City; and a great niece, Payton Harper, and great-nephew, Wyatt Harper, Smyrna. A gathering for family and friends to honor Janet's life will be on Friday, June 14, 2013 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at 1115 Cannon Trail, Oxford, Ga.
