Family-Placed Death Notice
LEFF, Julia Julia Ann Leff, 53, of Atlanta, passed away on May 2, 2013 due to complications from cholangiocarcinoma. She was born on Sept. 19, 1959 to Bernie and Norma Leff, in Houston, Texas and was raised in Topeka, Kansas. She graduated from the University of Colorado, then spent two years in the Peace Corps in Thailand. Upon returning, she received an MA in foreign language education from The University of Texas. She then spent a year in Madrid, Spain teaching ESL accompanied by her future husband, Ben Chapman. They returned to the states to marry and have two daughters, Emily and Elena. Julie taught ESL in both Fayetteville, AR and Tulsa, OK before eventually returning to school to get a nursing degree. Julie worked as an RN both in Tulsa and in Atlanta, most recently as a nurse for the melanoma team at the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Neil Leff. She is survived by her beloved husband of 24 years, Ben Chapman, her two daughters Emily and Elena Chapman of Atlanta, brothers Gordon (Andrea) of Austin, TX, Joseph (Cait) of Omaha, NE, mother and father-in-law Erin and Stephen Chapman of Winslow, AR , brother-in-law Sean (Kirsten) of Rock Island, IL, sister-in-law Megan of Fayetteville, AR and nieces and nephews Bennet, Alysa, Hannah, Harper, and Owen. A memorial gathering will be held at the Miller-Ward Alumni House on the campus of Emory University june 1, 2013 at 10:00 AM. In place of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, 1762 Clifton Rd. NE, Suite 1400, Atlanta, GA 30322. Gifts should be designated for either the "Winship Melanoma & Skin Cancer Fund" or the "Winship GI Oncology Fund."
