Kamal MANSOUR Obituary

MANSOUR, Kamal Akhnoukh Kamal Akhnoukh Mansour went to be with his Lord Jesus on June 6, 2016, after 48 years as a cardiothoracic surgeon at The Emory Clinic and Atlanta VA Medical Center and Professor of Surgery at Emory University. Born in Cairo, Egypt, he received his M.D. degree from Ein Shams University and began practicing as a surgeon at the Baptist Hospital in Ajloun, Jordan and Gaza. He followed a call and a dream in coming to the U.S. with his wife Sylvia Cleopatra and his daughter Sylvia. In the U.S., he found a country of great possibility and wanted to fulfill and excel in all the potential that God had given. With humor and intensity, he reveled in pioneering surgeries and later in teaching and mentoring another generation of surgeons, all with the priority of caring, treating, and healing of hundreds of patients. During the last 12 years, he has returned to Egypt many times to teach and train thoracic surgeons and was awarded Egypt's Shield of Medicine in 2001. In 2006 he and his wife established the Kamal A. Mansour Professorship in Thoracic Surgery at Emory University. He received the Emory Medal in 2008 and was named one of Emory University's 175 HistoryMakers. In 2010, he was given the Inspiration Award from the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association. His loved ones include wife Sylvia Cleopatra; daughter Sylvia and husband Samy Naguib; grandson Nicolas and wife Erin Bailey Naguib of N.Y., sister Widad Monsour in Egypt; sister-in-law Nadia Mansour, nephew Andrew and wife Kim Mansour of Nashville, TN; nephew Talaat and wife Magy Tadros, daughters Mary Grace and Sarah; nephew Maher and wife Dalal Mansour, son Sherif and wife Karla Mansour of Akron, OH. He was one of 8 children and had many beloved nieces and nephews in Egypt, Australia and Sweden. As much as he loved the ministry of surgery, he loved God's Word even more and was an enthusiastic Bible Study teacher for over 60 years. There will be graveside service at Arlington Memorial Park on Thursday, June 9 at 11:00 a.m. and a memorial service at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church on Friday, June 10 at 1:00 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Second-Ponce de Leon TV Ministry or the Kamal A. Mansour Professorship in Thoracic Surgery at Emory University.

I met Dr. Monsour in 1992 after many years of being misdiagnosed. I was treated for asthma unsucessfully until I began coughing up blood. My local pulmonologist referred me to Dr. Monsour and I am very glad he did. He wasted no time evaluating me and diagnosed me as having carcinoid tumors of the right lung. He was very sympathetic and caring. I was blessed to be in his care. I am sure he is receiving his blessings in heaven.

In 1971, Doctor Mansour operated on my niece, who was only 15. She is now 65, very active, an amazing and awesome woman. My family and I know that the Doctor saved her life. We are all grateful beyond words.

I am presently 35 years old. When I was about 14 I discovered I had achalasia and hiatal hernia. I was wasting away because of my inability to digest food. Dr. Mansour performed a myotomy and fundoplication surgery at Emory. Since then I have had no problems and I am forever greatful to him. He was an amazing person and I am sad to learn that he has passed. I'm sure there is a special place in heaven for him.

Our family has lived deeply indebted to Dr. Mansour for nearly 40 years. in 1977, after Houston doctors called my mother's complicated condition hopeless, we brought her to our home in Atlanta, and were blessed to find Dr. Mansour at Emory. He performed the complex, high risk surgery that "can't be done, but I can do it" (his own words), and miraculously gave my dear mother 11 more years of quality life. When she returned to Emory at age 87 with breast cancer, he paid a courtesy call....his warmth and sense of humor were the best medicine ever! Dr. Mansour possessed the rare combination of supreme confidence and humility, and wore both qualities well. We will never, ever forget him. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, and to all whose lives he touched....or changed, as he did ours in such an indescribably remarkable way....we share a common bond of forever gratitude.

Dr. Mansour shared with many of us that his name "Kamal" means "perfection". Dr. Mansour strove to achieve perfection in the OR. I had the privilege of working with him in the Emory OR from 1982-1996. He taught generations of students, CT fellows, and nurses basic and innovative thoracic surgical techniques. His surgical skill, humanitarian efforts, and wonderful homemade baklava will be missed.
Sending wishes of peace, strength, and comfort to the Mansour family...

My sincere condolences to Dr.Mansour's family. He was always very nice to me , never too busy to chat or share a funny story. He even brought me a pair of lapis earrings from Cairo , when he shared he would be going there for vacation , our running joke ,was that Me and my husband were going on the next trip , he always asked if we were ready to go . I will always appreciate his direct manner and sense of humor. He always had a smile on his face and the one thing that I truly respected was that he would take time and talk to the patients , he was personable and you don't see that special trait often. Prayers to his family and Rest easy Dr.Mansour you will be missed at VAMC.

Humanitarian and world-class surgeon and professor, Dr. Mansour was a pillar in not only the Egyptian community, but to Emory, his students, and the thousands of lives that he invariably touched. Inspirational in every way -- the world is a little sadder with this loss.

Dr. Mansour's family-you are in my thoughts and prayers. I wanted to tell you what Dr. Mansour meant to the Operating Room...
Dr. Mansour was here long before I began as an R.N. in the Operating Room at the V.A. Hospital, but from my beginning he constantly perfected his practice and made sure we were not far behind. He let absolutely nothing stand in his way of awarding a patient the life they so deserved and his bedside manner was impeccable. He made Thoracic Surgery personal and told the big vessels to 'get out of the way; he was saving this man's life.' Thoracic Surgery was personal to me also when in 1962, I would have lost my father to lung cancer, but for a Thoracic surgeon.
We will certainly miss him,
Eileen Brennan (Decatur)
