Family-Placed Death Notice
Mrs. Katherine Harrell Peterson, age 93, of Mt. Vernon, died Friday, December 17, 2004 at her home afer a lingering illness. She was born in Doerun, Georgia, moved to Tifton at an early age and moved to Mt. Vernon in 1936. She was a graduate of Tifton High School attended Greenville Women's College (now Furman University), and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1932 with an A.B. Degree in English. Mrs. Peterson taught in the Tift County and Montgomery County Schools for several years, taught French and English at Brewton-Parker Junior College for twenty one years and was honored by the College Alumni Association for her outstanding services. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International, was treasurer of the Mt. Vernon Garden Club for forty years and was presented a Life Membership in the Garden Club of Georgia by the club members in 1993, member of the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church for over sixty years, taught children's Sunday School for twenty five years and was a member of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Peterson was married to John Powell Peterson on June 14, 1939. He preceded her in death on January 22, 1971. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Dr. David B. Harrell and Blanche McLeod Harrell and her brother, Dr. Edward M. Harrell. Mrs. Peterson is survived by two sons, John Edward Peterson and wife, Lynda of Smyrna and Ray M. Peterson and wife Sarah of Marietta; one daughter, Kay Peterson Jones and husband, Herb of Rincon; eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren one sister, Margaret Fulwood of Tifton and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services for Mrs. Katherine Harrell Peterson will be held Sunday, December 19th at 3:00 PM at the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday evening from 5 to 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church or the Brewton-Parker College Scholarship Fund. Murchison Funeral Home of Vidalia is in charge of arrangements.
