Family-Placed Death Notice
LAURA PIRKLE AIKEN Laura Pirkle Aiken passed away on January 16th, 2007 at the Southeast Georgia Medical Center in Brunswick after a brief illness. She was born July 29, 1930 in Atlanta, Georgia, the only child of the late Golden Aurelius Pirkle and Carolyn Montgomery Pirkle. She received her education at Washington Seminary in Atlanta and later attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia and the University of Georgia in Athens. She loved to sing and she used her singing talent in the choir at Peachtree Christian Church, Atlanta, and Christ Church, Saint Simons. She moved to Saint Simons in 1958 and was active in the Saint Simons Elementary School PTA and for many years involved at Christ Church with the John Wesley Guild, the Tour of Homes, and the adult choir at Christ Church, and was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a real estate broker and then purchaser for Roberta's Shop at the Pier on Saint Simons. She will most be remembered for her gift of music, her gracious manner, her motherly wisdom, and her joyful sense of humor. She is survived by three sons: J.S. Harrison Aiken, Jr., of St. Simons Island; David Pirkle Aiken of Atlanta, Ga.; William Page Aiken of Atlanta, Ga.; and one daughter, Laura Caroline Aiken of Atlanta, Ga. Grandchildren: Sarah Page Dukes; J.S. Harrison Aiken III; Isaac Aiken; Corbin Aiken; Mallery Aiken; Hannah Aiken; and Jacob Aiken. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church on Saint Simons on Saturday, January 20th at 3pm. Immediately after the service, all are welcomed to join the family at her house at 208 Cater Street, Kelvin Grove, St. Simons for a celebration of her life.
