Lawrence WILSON

1935 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
WILSON, Sr., Lawrence Alexander Lawrence Alexander Wilson Sr., 81, died peacefully at home in Dallas, TX on Nov. 14, 2016. "Larry," the son of Buford Gray Sr. and Grace Estill Wilson, was born in Nashville, TN on July 8, 1935. After graduating from Montgomery Bell Academy, Larry earned a degree in Civil Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1957, where he was a member of Naval ROTC, swim team and Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Following graduation, he spent one year in military service on the USS Forrest Sherman and one year at the naval reserve training center in Atlanta, GA. Larry married Nancy Stackhouse, the love of his life, also of Nashville, in 1958. In 1959, he began a 57-year professional career with HCB Contractors under the mentorship of Joe Hutchison Sr. in Atlanta, where was a member of Capital City Club and the Piedmont Driving Club. He later moved to Dallas in 1976 to serve as President and Chief Executive Officer of The Beck Group. Larry served on numerous corporate, civic and school boards, including the Association of General Contractors, MBank, Northpark Bank, Prentiss Properties, Salesmanship Club of Dallas, St. Mark's School of Texas, Vanderbilt University and Young Presidents' Organization's Dallas Chapter. Following his retirement in 2006, Larry served as an advisor and mentor to senior leadership of The Beck Group until a few weeks prior to his passing. Together Larry and Nancy raised and nurtured three children and six grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his extended family at his farm, Brazos Old Fields, near Glen Rose, TX, as well as family vacations to DeBordieu, SC and Sea Island, GA. Larry was also a founder of The Friends of the Brazos, a coalition devoted to restoring and preserving the Brazos River's ecological environment. Ranching, cowboy poetry, hunting, fishing, golf, tennis and travel were just a few of his many hobbies. Known affectionately by his grandchildren as "Buddy," Larry would be dressed and ready to tell a story or spin around the dance floor at a moment's notice, and was always giving Nancy a wink or accepting a blown kiss. He will be missed near-and-far, especially by his Potluck Supper Club and friends at Dallas Country Club, Brook Hollow Golf Club and in Glen Rose. Larry is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Stackhouse Wilson; his three children and their families: Julie and Chuck Butterworth, their daughters Claire Charhon (Devin) and Callie; Larry Jr. and Caroline Wilson of Charlotte, NC, their children Alex and Sarah Bailey; John and Kelly Wilson, their sons Jack and Gray; twin brother Wallace Estill Wilson of Nashville, TN; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother Buford Gray Wilson, Jr. A service to celebrate the life of Lawrence Alexander Wilson will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church at 4 p.m. on Nov. 17. In lieu of flower, donations may be made to Friends of the Brazos River, Inc. at 6336 Goliad, Dallas, TX 75214; or St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church at 8011 Douglas Ave., Dallas, TX 75225.
