Family-Placed Death Notice

Margaret Deane Somers, 85, a gentlewoman who loved her family, her church, her friends and her garden, passed away on November 4, 2007 at her home in Vidalia, Georgia, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She was the widow of the late William C. Somers, Jr., who died in 1986. Born December 22, 1921, in Seattle, Washington, Margaret was the only child of the late Celia Frances Wright and George Freeman Deane. She grew up in Sacramento and Grass Valley, California. In 1944 Margaret earned her Bachelor of Science degree at The School of Journalism, University of Oregon. She served as co-editor of the University paper and was a member of Delta, Delta, Delta Sorority. Margaret met William Coite Somers, Jr., when he was serving in the U.S. Army, stationed in Eugene, Oregon. They were married in January 1944, just before he left for duty in the European Theater, where he served in the invasion of Normandy. Margaret came to Georgia and worked in advertising and commercial art until they moved to Vidalia to begin their family. Margaret's life revolved around her husband, her children, her church and gardening. She also found time to participate in community activities, among them: Pine Ridge Garden Club, Vidalia Woman's Club, Vidalia Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Franklinia Playhouse. In 1973 and 1976 she planned and led extensive Girl Scout tours of Europe. She adored traveling and often entertained her grandchildren with her memories. She enjoyed her art and continued to experiment with painting even as her vision failed. She was energetic, running a working farm for many years, growing orchids, and attending exercise classes until the last weeks of her life. Mrs. Somers is survived by four daughters, Tyra Deane Somers of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Hope Somers Murphy and her husband Norman Jerome Murphy of Vidalia; Faith Somers Burke and her husband Francis Wayne Burke of Vidalia; and, Margaret Somers Shepard and her husband John Bartlett Shepard of Atlanta; five grandchildren, Coite Bennett Manuel of Washington, D.C.; Olivia Williford Pratt and her husband Frank Graham Pratt, III of Cartersville, Georgia; Katherine Margaret Manuel of Birmingham, Alabama; William Duncan Shepard of Atlanta; and, Margaret Deane Shepard of Atlanta. Her caregivers, considered family, included: Annie Baker, Angie Stanfield, Lovada Dykes and Lucinda Wiggs. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 8, 2007 at 2:00 pm in the Vidalia Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Kevin Hicks officiating. Interment will follow in the Pine Crest Cemetery. The family will be at home 1114 Center Drive, Vidalia and will have a formal visitation on Wednesday from 5:30 until 7:30. Pallbearers will be: James Jackson, Reid McArthur, Tom Meredith, James Reid, Alan Rice, David Rice, Mac Suber and John Warthen.
