Family-Placed Death Notice

ANDERSON, Marie Marie Therese Johnson Anderson died Friday, August 3, 2012. Services will be held at 2:00PM on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at Fort Valley United Methodist Church, 301 West Church Street in Fort Valley with Rev. James Hamlin and Rev. Ellis Carpenter officiating. Family will receive friends at her home at 206 Everett Square in Fort Valley from 5:00PM to 7:00PM on Monday, August 6, 2012. Mrs. Anderson requested no flowers and donations be made to the Fort Valley United Methodist Church Building Fund, Thomas Public Library or . Born in Manning, SC on July 22, 1919, she was the daughter of Freenly L. Johnson of Sumter, SC, and Marie Therese Guillet Johnson of Saint Nazaire, France. Mrs. Anderson graduated from Kingstree, SC High School and Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC. She moved to Georgia to teach where she met Ernest R. Anderson. They married on August 14, 1941. She was very interested in Girl Scouts, was a scout and became a Girl Scout leader. She taught at Peach County High School for 26 years, was twice named Teacher of the Year, and was a debate coach. A member of Fort Valley United Methodist Church, she was involved in Sunday School. A Ladies' Bible Study met at her home for many years. Also active in community affairs, she was a trustee of Peach Public Libraries and a Garden Club member. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest R. Anderson. Survivors include their children, Ernest R. Anderson, Jr. and his wife Deena of Byron, Ellen M. Anderson Whitmer and husband George of Jacksonville, FL, Louise Anderson Brockinton and husband Sam of Sumter, SC, and William M. Anderson of Atlanta; grandchildren, Ernest R. Anderson III, Laine Anderson West, Therese Brockinton Hodges, Joan Whitmer, Steven Whitmer and Catherine Brockinton; great grandchildren, Jackson West, Samuel Hodges, Abney Marie Hodges and Marley Jane Hodges; a sister, Ellen Marie Johnson Barker of Columbia, SC, and many nieces and nephews.
