Family-Placed Death Notice

HARRIS, Narvie J. Narvie J. Harris: A Life Well Lived, A Legacy Worth Leaving As the sun set on the evening of October 30, 2009, Gabriel was instructed to sound the trumpet and Narvie Jordan Harris obediently and joyfully responded to God's clarion call. The sunrise in her life began when she was born in Wrightsville, Georgia to the late James E. Jordan ,Auburn Avenue Business Department store owner and Homemaker the late Anna Hobbs Jordan. Shortly after her birth, the family relocated to Atlanta where Narvie and her 4 siblings matriculated through the Atlanta Public Schools. Daryll, I just learned of your loss of your mom during my visit with John during the Xmas holidays. I know how blessed we are when our parent(s) have longevity, and I hope your memories will help sustain you during your grief. Your parents prepared dinner for John and me back in 1976 when we were visiting my girlfriend in Atlanta.
Please extend my condolences to Mike/Michael.

"Blessed are they that morn for they will be comforted" Mrs. Harris was a inspiration, mentor and supporter of mine during my years as College Park Elementary PTA President, South Fulton Council PTA President, Family and Parent Involvement Chairperson for the Georgia PTA and State Treasurer for the Goergia PTA. Narvie always supported and attended our functions and as recently as the 2008 Georgia PTA State Convention where we particapated in the walk of Honor as Honorary Life Members of the Georgia PTA. She was a beautiful spirit and inspired me to continue to work with the people of our futurre The Children.

To the Narvie J. Harris Family,
As a parent of children who had the priviledge of matriculating through the hallowed halls of Narvie J. Harris Traditional Theme School, it was always a pleasure seeing Mrs. Narvie J. Harris visit the campus during special presentations and especially during the Christmas Dinner Theatre. It was always a joy to witness the sparkle in her eye as she marveled at the beautiful display of talent in the children at her namesake school.

At Clark Atlanta University, I also have the pleasure of being a patron of her daughter Darryl's and grandson Micheal's business "Accolades", which like her mother produces top quality work. From her family, community giving and the love of children Mrs. Narvie J. Harris has time and time again demonstrated that she is truly an extraordinary women who excelled at life.

Sincerely,
Ernita B. Hemmitt and Children of Narvie J. Harris Theme School- Aste, Imani and Nia Hemmitt

To the family of Narvie J Harris. I am the granddaughter of Elizabeth J . Robinson and the daughter of Helen Jackson from Cleveland Ohio. Narvie and my grandmother were cousins. When I came to Atlanta it was cousin Narvie that helped get my children into school,. I remeber riding around with her in the car looking at schools. I called her aunt Narvie. But it was through her inspiration that I am now very active in some of the same organizations that she was associated with. Even though we never met I love you all and she will be greatly missed. My mother Helen who was born right here in atlanta, Ga gives her prayers and love to you and your family. But she couldn't remeber the nickname you called her. Aunt Narvie is at home now with all of her family including my grandmother and Aunt Minnie Pearl who I had the pleasure to meet along with other aunts and cousins that remain behind in Atlanta and those that live in Ohio. So again from all your relatives in Cleveland Ohio and Dayton God Bless you and your family. There is a family reuion in Heaven now and God is rejocing Love .... I am blessed to be a product of the Dekalb County School System. I attended scool during the 1960's and 70's. My matriculation began at the segregated Victoria Simmons Elementary School of Stone Mountain. It was there as a young child that I met and felt the influence of Mrs. Narvie Harris. Mrs. Harris was a very positive influence during my formative years. When Mrs. Harris entered the building her presence was felt by student and teacher alike. The principals Mr. Bowie and Mr. Dixon taught us to have an awesome respect and admiration for Mrs. Harris.I was again blessed when I was able to develop a relationship with Mrs. Harris as a adult. I delighted when called me "Simmons" Bailey. I shall never forget the inspiring telephone conversations and thoughtful Christmas cards. While serving as President of the Dekalb County Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, it was my delight to honor Mrs. Harris as an educational icon. She shall never be forgotten and her infuence shall ever be felt. Mrs. Narvie J. Harris laid the foundation. I praise God that He allowed me to know her.

TO THE FAMILY OF MRS. NARVIE HARRIS,

I had the priviledge of writing Narvie Harris' book. I will cherish the many things she shared and taught me during that year....and especially the endearing friendship and mentorship that followed. To sit at the feet of a true SAGE is simply a gift from God. Her life afforded me the opportunity to pen her historical fingerprints on education. Continue her light and legacy, Daryll, as the "remarkable woman" she was - - and that you are. Please know she was the "BORDER FLOWER" for so many others in life's garden - - protecting, defining, maintaining, giving character, making others' lives LESS daunting.

Darryl, you have my deepest sympathy and prayers in the loss of your Mother. The first time I met Mrs. Harris was as she served as a parent volunteer during registration on my first day as a ninth grader at the "new" C.L. Harper High School where we were both students. She asked me about my plans beyond high school and I told her my plans. Years later I had the pleasure to work with her in the Department of Elementary Instruction for the DeKalb County School System. I am thankful to have had received the words of wisdom and encouragement that she shared. It was a joy to work with her again with the opening of the Traditional Theme School named in her honor. She leaves a legacy of excellence which can be seen in you and all whose lives she touched. Thank you for sharing her with so many over the years. May your faith in God continue to sustain you today and always.

To Mrs. Harris' Family,
I had the privilege of speaking with Mrs. Harris several times during my years on the DeKalb PTA Council. She shared so many wonderful thoughts, ideas, opinions, and words of wisdom with me. I am grateful that she shared so much of her life with children and families. She really made a difference in the lives of many.

OUR PRAYERS GOES OUT TO NARVIE J. HARRIS' FAMILY AND FRIENDS. MY DAUGHTER BROOKE ELLA KING WAS AT NARVIE J. HARRIS TRADITIONAL THEME SCHOOL WHEN IT FIRST OPENED. MY DAUGHTER WANTED TO GO THERE BUT THERE WAS A LOTTERY POOL AND I WAS NOT GOING TO CAMP OUT AT NIGHT BUT MY DAUGHTER STILL WANTED TO GO TO NARVIE J. HARRIS. SO, THAT SATURDAY MORNING I WENT TO CHAPEL HILL ELEM SCHOOL AND PUT MY DAUGHTER'S NAME IN THE LOTTERY AND SHE MADE IT! MS. CREAMER WAS THE SECRETARY AND MS. DAVIS WAS THE PRINCIPAL. THAT WAS ONE OF THE BEST EDUCATIONAL DECISIONS I MADE. WE WENT TO THE CEREMONY WHEN THE SCHOOL FIRST OPENED AND MET MS. NARVIE J. HARRIS AND EVERYTHING WAS JUST EXCELLENT. I'VE MET HER A COUPLE MORE TIMES WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS ENROLLED THERE AND SHE IS A VERY PLEASANT PERSON WANTING THE CHILDREN TO STRIVE FOR EXELLENCE. THERE WAS A MATH SPECIALIST AT THE SCHOOL NAMED MS ADA SADLER WHICH CAME INTO MY DAUGHER'S CLASSROOM TO TEACH MATH AND THAT IS WHEN MY DAUGHTER EXCELLED IN MATH AND MATH IS STILL MY DAUGHTER'S FAVORITE SUBJECT. BROOKE GRUADUATED FROM MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2007 AND NOW A JUNIOR AT UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA MAJORING IN BIOCHEMESTRY. NARVIE J. HARRIS SET THE GROUND RULES FOR HER WILLINGNESS TO EXCEL AND WE THANK YOU. DEEPEST SYMPATHY.

Narvie was "one of a kind". She was smart, possessed a keen wit, friendly, a sharp dresser and a supportive friend. I have known her virtually all of my life. She was a long time friend and fellow church member of my late mother and often mentioned to me how she missed talking to my mother. I will miss talking to her! I could always find Narvie sitting and reigning supreme at the Darnell Center ( or out shopping for Michael). We would engage in various conversations about local or world affairs. She was quite knowledgeable about many things. She will truely be missed.

Narvie Harris leaves a legacy in so many ways, as a teacher, a pioneer, a mentor, an encourager and a historian. She often shared her history and that of the DeKalb School System with me and awakened in me the desire to know more and do more to preserve that history. Her wonderful voice on the phone led me to pause in whatever I was doing to take in her words. History matters and it scatters in the words of someone she admired Jamie Mackey. Another part of our history has scattered, but it is my hope that it has scattered into the hearts of those who knew and loved her and will want to share her story forward. sue ellen owens williams
