Family-Placed Death Notice

RICHARD M. AILION Of Atlanta, died Thursday, October 21, 2004 after a long struggle with diabetes. H.M. Patterson, Spring Hill is in charge of arrangements. Memorial service Thursday, October 28, 2004. Visitation from 4 p.m. with service at 6 p.m. Born April 16, 1929 in New York City, he spent his formative years in London, before returning to NYC. He served in the Army's 101st Airborn Division, and due to his marksmanship with a 45 pistol he was assigned to guard Japanese General Tojo during the War Trials in Japan following WWII. Upon his return to NY, he pursued a degree in Horticulture from N.Y. State College of Agriculture. Mr. Ailion was an early pioneer in the floral, holiday, and gift industry. He was one of the first to sign a lease (1958) on a showroom in the new Atlanta Merchandise Mart, and moved his family from Chattanooga to Avondale Estates in 1961. He was the last of the original tenants to retire from the Mart. He and his wife also owned Hello World Travel. He leaves his wife and business partner of 51 years, Nita Ailion of Atlanta; 2 sons, a daughter, and 4 grandchildren, Robert D. Sr., wife, Donna, and Robert Jr., Avondale Estates; Jack A., wife Mary, Katie and Rickey of Alpharetta; Andrea Ailion Sikora, Dahlonega; and granddaughter Candice Sikora of Dallas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the National Diabetes Assc. H.M. Patterson & Son Spring Hill Chapel. 404-876-1022.
