Family-Placed Death Notice

ARNOLD, Richard Richard Mark Arnold, 63, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2011, after a courageous fight with cancer. Mark was the second son of Herman Ross Arnold, Jr. and Carolyn Wallace Arnold. Born in Decatur, Georgia, on May 6, 1948, Mark attended Liberty Guinn and James L. Riley elementary schools. He graduated in 1966 from The Westminster Schools, where he was an Honor Roll student, National Merit Scholarship Finalist, and member of the National Honor and Cum Laude Societies. As a senior, he won the Georgia high school wrestling championship in the Unlimited Weight Class division, defeating two of his neighbors in the tournament. He earned a football scholarship to Duke University, where he studied economics and graduated in 1970. A talented vocalist, Mark sang basso profundo in the Westminster Glee Club, the Chapel Choir at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, and at Duke University. He pursued voice training at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City after college and appeared in numerous musical and theatre productions there. He sang professionally as a soloist and appeared in television commercials and films. Mark was employed as a case worker for the New York City welfare department as he continued musical studies. He eventually entered the advertising industry, working for the Young and Rubicam media planning department in New York while simultaneously pursuing his professional musical and acting career. He also worked several years in advertising and media promotion for J. W. Thompson, Inc. and Mindshare Inc., in Taipei, Taiwan, and in London, England. Mark returned to Atlanta in 2001, and was a chorister at the North Avenue Presbyterian Church, with the Georgia Festival Chorus, and with the Michael O'Neal Singers, in each of which he made many cherished friends. Mark will be remembered well for the friendship and kindness he offered those who knew him and for his sense of humor, quick wit, and large laugh. He is survived by his beloved wife, Judith Ann Canlon, formerly of Staten Island, New York; two brothers, H. Ross Arnold, III (Claire) and John Wyatt Arnold, II (Cindy), both of Atlanta; three sisters, Margaret Arnold Wong (Abe) of Atlanta, Sally Arnold (Thomas Bloore) of Geneva, IL, and Debora Arnold Allen of Pine, CO. He also leaves eight well-loved nieces and nephews: Mary Wallace Arnold of Boston, MA; Elizabeth Fielding Arnold of Durham, NC; William Ross Arnold of Atlanta; Susan Lindsey Wong and Carolyn Hayes Wong of Winston-Salem, NC; and Abby Lauren Wong, Victoria Joy Arnold, and Wallace Kelley Arnold of Atlanta. The funeral service will be at the North Avenue Presbyterian Church, 607 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday, June 25, at 11 am. The family gratefully requests that any memorials be offered and designated to the Hospice Atlanta Center, whose loving care comforted each day of Mark's journey: Visiting Nurse Healthcare Society (VNHS) at either www. vnhs.org or 607 Glenridge Drive, Atlanta, GA 30328.
