Dr. Robert R. FREEMAN Obituary
Dr. Robert R. Freeman passed away October 21, 2016 in Alpharetta, Georgia at the age of 84. Born in Jordan, Montana in 1931 to the late Harley and Georgia Worley Freeman, Bob, as his friends called him, was regarded by family and friends as the consummate gentleman cowboy. He was known for his wit, grace, humor, intellect, and story-telling talents. He had great faith in, and affection for, people, encouraging them to be themselves and believing that working together on shared goals and ideals was the most effective way to achieve success. As a younger man, he was more interested in athletics than academics, earning ten varsity high school letters in football, basketball, and track. Later, following four years of service as an instructor with the U.S. Air Force, he played basketball on the 1954 freshman team at Indiana University. After graduating from Indiana University in 1965 with a Doctor of Education degree, Bob served as superintendent of schools in Menominee, Michigan; Mishawaka, Indiana; Muncie, Indiana; Pueblo, Colorado; and in DeKalb County, Georgia for 16 years, 1980-1996. His career as an educator spanned 43 years as a teacher, administrator, superintendent, and consultant for Metro RESA. Although Bob received many local and national awards, he was most proud of receiving the Young Man of the Year Award, Menominee Jaycees; PTA Life Membership from Indiana, Colorado, and Georgia; Outstanding Alumnus Award, Indiana University; National Educators Century Club; Certificate of Recognition from Martin Luther King Center, Muncie, Indiana; Human Relations Award, DeKalb Community Relations Commission; Outstanding School Administrator of the Year, Peachtree-Atlanta Kiwanis; President of the National Federation of Urban-Suburban School Districts; Superintendent of the Year, American Association of School Administrators; and two Executive Educator 100 awards. Bob is survived by two sons, Robin Freeman (Frankie) of Grayson, GA and Timothy Freeman (Teresa) of Big Canoe, GA; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and 5 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wives Jean Ann Jessup and Mary Lou Day.At Bob's request, a private graveside service in Conyers, GA will be held on Thursday, October 27. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the at alz.org. Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory in Jasper, Georgia, and online condolences can be made at www.roperfuneralhome.com.
