Sherwood MERCHANT Jr. Obituary
MERCHANT, Jr., Sherwood A. Sherwood A. Merchant, Jr., a true southern gentleman, died October 18, 2016, at the age of 94. He was born November 3, 1921. He was almost a native of Atlanta having moved here from Florida in 1929. He is survived by Peggy, his loving wife of over 62 years, two sons - Mark (wife Cindy) and Matthew (wife Debi), daughter Melissa, and three grandchildren - Jena Powell, Molly Merchant and Miranda Merchant. Sherwood was a product of the Atlanta School System having attended Crew Street Grammar School, Hoke Smith Jr. High and Commercial High, where he graduated in 1940. His first job was Assistant Manager of the Euclid Theatre in Little Five Points. After working 55 hours a week for $15, he found a job paying $18 for 40 hours, which was the start of his career with Draper Corporation, then the world's largest maker of looms for cotton mills. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army from 1942-1946 where he made the grand tour of Europe with General George Patton's Third Army. Sherwood was active in many service organizations. He had a 40 year relationship with Capitol Area Kiwanis, serving in every office including Lt. Governor of the Georgia 16th Division, and was presented the Hixson Award in 1999. He was a member of Administrative Management Society for over 30 years, serving in many leadership roles including President of the Atlanta Chapter and International Director. As a member of these organizations, Sherwood and Peggy enjoyed visiting almost every major city and several foreign countries. The Salvation Army, an organization he served for over 45 years, held a special place in his heart. He was a founding member of the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center Advisory Council, and chairman for several years. He was president of the Commercial High Alumni Association and attended all reunions. He was a member of the Atlanta Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society. Sherwood's 80 years of dedication to the United Methodist Church has included every job except pastor...and he could have done that, too. He taught Sunday school for over 60 years. Sherwood and Peggy enjoyed dancing and won several contests. Sherwood was well known for his keen sense of humor. He loved God, his country and his family, and always had an eye for lovely ladies. He said he didn't have any enemies because they had all died. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, October 30, 2016, 3 p.m. at Union United Methodist Church, 4600 Hwy. 138, Stockbridge, GA 30281. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, 740 Marietta St., NW, Atlanta, GA 30318 or Union United Methodist Church, 4600 Hwy 138, Stockbridge, GA 30281.
