Family-Placed Death Notice
Stephen A. Abernathy, 59 of Locust Grove passed away on March 8, 2006. Steve was a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He is survived by his mother, Margaret Abernathy; daughter, Kristina (Mark) Stackow; son, Brad (Janann) Abernathy; grandsons, Tyler and Cayden Abernathy; sister, Brenda (Dave) Millican; niece, and nephews, Beth, Lee and Michael Millican and many close friends. Steve was born January 6, 1947. He graduated from Sandy Springs High School in 1965 and DeKalb College in 1967. He was employed by Delta Airlines for 28 years. Steve had a lifelong love of nature and the outdoors. His home located on a beautiful and pristine lake in Henry County provided an ideal place for him to share his knowledge and love of the outdoors with his son and grandsons. He spent many happy hours with them enjoying nature's beauty and fishing. Steve's mission in life in recent years was to work through Alcoholics Anonymous and helping others overcome drug and alcohol addictions. He had celebrated his 11th anniversary with AA and worked tirelessly in helping hundreds of others overcome their addictions. On January 13, Steve suffered a heart attack. He died from resulting respiratory complications. He was surrounded by his family and several close friends when he passed away. Before his passing, Steve spent 54 days in the intensive care unit of Spalding Regional Medical Center. His family will never be able to fully express their gratitude to Dr. John Dupre and his staff for their kindness and heroic efforts to save Steve's life. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11, at 2 PM at Sandy Springs Chapel. The body will be cremated. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Noah's Ark, 712 LG-Griffin Rd.
