1925 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
DURANT, Sybil Gene Sybil Gene Murphy Durant died peacefully at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, GA, on the morning of Saturday, October 22, 2016. She was 91. Sybil was born in Montgomery, AL, on September 28, 1925, to Zell and Margaret Katherine Summerour Murphy. She grew up in Montgomery and Evergreen, Conecuh County, AL, where she was graduated from Evergreen High School in 1943. She continued her education at Alabama College in Montevallo, AL, and then at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in Auburn, AL. She was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society and received her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics (Home Management) from Auburn in 1947. After graduation, Sybil worked as a professional home economist, working with the Birmingham Electric Company and then as a Home Demonstration Agent in Mobile and Chatham Counties, AL, from 1947 through 1950. On February 26, 1950, Sybil married Lewis Durant. They were married for more than 62 years until his death in 2012. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, moving with Lewis as he was transferred to various locations for his career with United States Steel. They lived in Birmingham, AL, and Houston, TX, before settling in Atlanta, GA, in 1968, where Lewis finished his career in 1987. They continued to live in Atlanta during their retirement years. Sybil was devoted to her church, serving in numerous capacities at the churches where she was a member. As an adult, she was a member of Southside Baptist, Dawson Memorial Baptist, and Green Valley Baptist in Birmingham, AL; Tallowood Baptist in Houston, TX; and Briarlake Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA. She taught Sunday School, served as a Girls in Action leader, served as a Vacation Bible School Children's Director, and was involved in many other church ministries over the years. She also served as a Cub Scout Den Mother. Sybil is survived by her son Richard Lewis Durant and his wife Brenda Fay Rednour Durant of Redlands, CA; her daughter Mary Katherine Durant of Atlanta, GA; her son David Zell Durant and his wife Rita Anne O'Laughlin Durant of Mobile, AL; her grandchildren Richard Lewis Durant, Jr. of Riverside, CA; Micah Zell Durant of Mobile, AL; Luke David Durant of San Jose, CA; Bradley John Durant and his wife Rebecca Joy Mondich Durant of San Diego, CA; William Mark Durant of Long Beach, MS; and Sharon Diane Durant of San Luis Obispo, CA; her brother Samuel Harold Murphy of Tampa, FL, sister-in-law Elena Murphy of Alexandria, VA, and sister-in-law Laura Durant Ford of Spanish Fort, AL. She was predeceased by her brother Zell Louis Murphy. The visitation and funeral will be at the chapel of their church on Saturday, October 29, followed by a brief graveside service. The visitation will begin at 1:00 P.M., and the funeral will begin at 2:00 P.M. The church address is Briarlake Baptist Church, 3715 Lavista Road, Decatur, GA 30033. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Briarlake Baptist Church.
