CASTLEBERRY, Jr., William WILLIAM THOMAS CASTLEBERRY JR. William Thomas "Willie T", "Bill" Castleberry Jr. 90, passed away Nov. 3rd, 2013 in Atlanta, GA. He was born on Nov. 17th 1922 to William and Thelma Castleberry in South Charleston, West Virginia. Bill joined the WV National Guard in 1938 at the age of 16. He enlisted in the Navy Feb. 1941 and immediately requested submarine service. He received his qualifications for submarines in 1943. During WWII he served on 3 subs: USS Narwhal, USS Peto, USS Queenfish. His most memorial time while on the USS Narwhal was the day they were depth charged 118 times. "A very long and difficult day, we later limped back to Pearl Harbor for repairs" He did a total of 9 war patrols during WWII, all in the Pacific Theater.After the war he went to a new construction boat and commissioned the USS Halfbeak. He also served aboard the destroyer USS Irwin before returning to submarine duty aboard the USS Spikefish. Bill retired from the Navy after 22yrs as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1962 and moved his family back to South Charleston, WV where for 2yrs he owned and operated a restaurant in the Beni Kedem Shrine Center. He then worked for and retired from after 20yrs the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms. He also worked for the State of WV in Security Investigations.Bill was very active with the Masons, Shriners and the Jesters. He also stayed very active with the WWII Submarine Veteran's Association and was the Georgia State Commander of the Sub Vets until his death. In 2003, Bill and his wife Tina moved to St. Marys, GA to be closer to their sons. Together they converted to Catholicism in 2005. After Tina's death in 2007, Bill moved back to WV. In 2010 he married Rosalie North and moved to Atlanta, GA. Bill lived a very full life. He was a wonderful man, devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great grandfather and uncle. He is preceded in death by his wife of 48yrs Justina Castleberry, his parents William & Thelma Castleberry, and his brother Kelly Castleberry. He is survived by his wife Rosalie North Castleberry, Atlanta, GA, his sister-in-law Lorena Castleberry, So Charleston, WV, his children: Thomas (Luise) Dailey, Key Largo, FL, Nicolette (Jon) Harney, St Joseph, IL, Christina (Tony) Bennett, Nitro, WV, Michael (Melinda) Castle Kingsland, GA, Patrick (Mary) Castleberry, Kingsland, GA, Frank Kirkland, Baltimore, MD, Loralie Arnold, Jasper, GA, Ruth (Markus) Jackson, Atlanta, GA. 21 Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be 2 services; the first will be in West Virginia with visitation on Nov 15th from 6pm to 8pm at Snodgrass Funeral Home in South Charleston, WV with grave side burial at 11:00 am on Nov. 16th at Sunset Memorial Park. The second will be a funeral mass in St Marys, GA at Our Lady Star of the Sea at a later date.
