Obituary Condolences

Family-Placed Death Notice

Elizabeth Jean Higgins, a professor of English Literature for more than 25 years, died of colon cancer May 19th. She was 70. Born October 22, 1932 in Illinois, Dr. Higgins spent most of her life in Illinois, Utah, Colorado and California. An avid lover of world literature, philosophy and history, Dr. Higgins was a strong believer in formal education. She was graduated from San Diego State University with a bachelor's in English, and completed her graduate work at the University of California at Los Angeles, where she was awarded a doctorate in English Literature. After earning her Ph.D., which she considered the great achievement of her life, she began her career at Tuskegee University in Alabama. Dr. Higgins found deep meaning in her work. For 25 years, she was on the faculty of Clark Atlanta University. Dr. Higgins loved CAU, her students and her colleagues. Intellectual without being an intellectual snob, she loved a good conversation. She also co-authored "Reading The Novel", during her tenure at the CAU. Dr. Higgins was a devoted sister, aunt and daughter. She is survived by two brothers, Joseph Higgins of Atlanta and William Higgins of San Diego; and one niece, Adele Evans, of Baltimore. A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday May 27, 2003 at 2 o'clock at Arlington Memorial Park. H.M. Patterson and Son Oglethorpe Hill, 4550 Peachtree Rd. NE. 404-261-3510
