Walden ELLIOTT Sr. Obituary
ELLIOTT, Sr., Walden WALDEN WILSON ELLIOTT, SR. Walden Wilson Elliott, Sr. of Dunwoody, Georgia, age 90, died on February 28, 2014. He was the son of the late Solon William and Lonnie Smith Elliott, both from Clinch County, Georgia. After the death of his parents, he made his home with a loving aunt, Mrs. Paul Austria of Waycross, Georgia. He received his education from the University of Georgia and Georgia State University. During World War II, he served in the 20th Air Force as a B-29 pilot stationed on Tinian Island in the Marianna Islands. He flew the last mission of the war and when returning to Tinian, the crew heard over the radio that Japan had surrendered and the war was over. As an honor, General McArthur selected Walden's 58th bomber group to fly a ceremonial flight over the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay at the signing of Japan's surrender. Walden received the Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal and five other medals for his service. He loved flying and later enjoyed flying his Cherokee 180 plane. He had a great appreciation for music; his house was filled with all types, especially opera. He retired from the United States Postal Service after 30 years of service. He loved his family and recorded their history in photo displays and numerous picture albums. Walden is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Margie Jackson Elliott. He is also survived by his sons Solon William Elliott and Walden Wilson Elliott, Jr.; grandchildren, Matthew Wilson Elliott and Kelly Elliott Cure; and great grandchildren, Madilyn Avery Cure and Matthew Wilson Elliott, Jr. Walden will be interred in Greenwood Cemetery at a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the World War II Veterans Honor Flight program at Honor Flight, Inc., Attn: Diane Gresse, 300 E. Auburn Avenue, Springfield, Ohio 45505.
