Obituary Condolences

CAMPBELL, Shirley Shirley LeConte Haddock Campbell died on Monday, July 7. She was preceded in death by her brother John Terrell Haddock and their parents Lillian LeConte Haddock and John Newton Haddock, Jr. She is survived by her brother William LeConte Haddock of Burlington, VT. and her two children - Scott Mooring Campbell, Jr. and Ashley LeConte Campbell - both of Atlanta. Mrs. Campbell was a graduate of Washington Seminary and Newcomb College - where she was president of Phi Mu sorority and vice president of the student body. She made her debut with the Atlanta Debutante Club and served as president of The Assemblies. For years she was an active member of Atlanta's Junior League. Her driving passion was teaching music to young people; she taught for 37 years at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta. She was one of the few women to have conducted the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in concert. Her career included performing as solo pianist with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra and receiving a national award for her published piano compositions. When a dear friend bequeathed her a violin, she began the study of this new instrument in her sixties and eventually performed for several years with the Atlanta Community Symphony Orchestra. Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 14 at 1pm in the foyer of Pressly Hall at The Westminster Schools. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Saint Cecilia Consort/First Presbyterian Church, the Elementary School Music Department of The Westminster Schools, or the Atlanta Opera.
