Vera JONES Obituary
JONES, Vera VERA JONES Vera was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, as well as a spiritual, life-long member of the United Methodist Church, doing God's work from the day she was born. Professionally, she was an award-winning teacher. Every student she taught knew it was business when the class bell rang, and the business was learning. While teaching was not just a job, but a profession for Vera, when the day she was eligible for retirement, she did so immediately. That enabled her to do what she loved even more. That was to travel with the true love of her life, her childhood sweetheart, best friend and husband, George. After their retirement, George and Vera hit the road and traveled to all 50 states. Driving there was as much a part of the adventure as the destination. The family could only laugh as one of their trips to Colorado Springs was via Winnipeg, Manitoba. That made perfect sense for them. They always shared the driving duties. Vera was quite the experienced driver. Her late father David C. Haley of the Hickory Flat community in Cherokee County told her to drive down to the crossroads to get something for him from the store. She did, despite the fact she was only 12 years old. For her sons, Greg, Hal and Ken, each knew what it was like to be one of Vera's students. She taught each in 8th Grade Math. In the classroom they were not her "sons," but her students and no one could accuse her of favoritism. One of her sons' favorite tales about their Mom was that she was such a serious person that she only laughed one time: it was a particular episode of "I Dream of Jeannie." Of course she did laugh more than once, but it was one of those family moments and stories that will always be cherished. Vera's other great love and talent was cooking. As a Home Economics major at Georgia State College for Women, she learned a valuable lesson she taught her students and her sons. "If you can read, you can cook." Yet there was more to it with Vera, she just knew the art and science of it innately, and if you had ever eaten one if her meals or sweets (dessert before dinner was fine for her), you knew she was a real culinary talent. Education was vital to Vera and George. Each held a Master's degree. Between Vera, George and the boys, they collectively hold ten degrees of higher learning. So much more can be said about Vera, but as a closing matter that says volumes Vera would leave you, from the 54th row of Section 135 of Sanford Stadium, with a boisterous Go Dogs! Vera Jones was called home on July 11, 2014. The Jones family will be accepting family and friends on Saturday, July 12, 2014 from 4-6PM, and on Sunday, July 13, 2014 from 2-6PM. A funeral service will take place Monday, July 14, 2014 at 12 Noon at Canton First United Methodist Church with Dr. C.R. Hill officiating. Mrs. Jones will be laid to rest at Georgia National Cemetery.
