Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 6, 2016.
WOLFF, Marthe Ballance Marthe Ballance Wolff, 40, passed away peacefully at her home in Buckhead, March 4, 2016, surrounded by family and friends following a courageous five year battle with ALS. Born at Piedmont Hospital July 20, 1975, Marthe grew up in Atlanta, where she attended The Heiskell School, The Westminster Schools and graduated from Pace Academy. Marthe earned a Bachelor of Science Degree at Stetson University where she was a scholarship cadet in the ROTC program. She was selected to attend paratrooper training and graduated from the US Army Airborne School. She was also a member of the Stetson Varsity Rowing Team, where she was selected to row in the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston. Marthe was a flight attendant with United Airlines until 2001. She then earned her Masters Degree in Business Administration from Georgia State University. She ultimately found her true passion in nursing and received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri. She has worked as a neurological ICU nurse at the University of Kansas Medical Center and Emory University Hospital. Marthe was an adventurous traveler and enjoyed a variety of sports throughout her life including running, rowing, snow skiing, and waterskiing. As a member of Northwest Presbyterian Church, she enjoyed giving generously of her time and talents. She was active in the choir, youth program and Presbyterian Women. She served as Moderator of Presbyterian Women in 2014-2015 and has been awarded with the Life Membership Award for 2015-2016. Marthe's life was devoted to others, both professionally and personally. Despite the challenges she faced with her diagnosis she never lost her positive attitude and joyful spirit. She remained a source of strength and inspiration to everyone she touched. She is survived by her husband Mark, son August, parents Harry Jr. and Carol Ballance, sisters Katie Ballance Muir (James), Laura Ballance May (Peter), brother Harry Ballance, III, grandmother Edwardine Petersen, uncle Don Petersen, aunt Patricia Ballance Mandes, father and mother-in-law Dan and Kathy Wolff, sister-in-law Danielle Wolff, nephews, Kale Moore, John Muir, Simon May, and niece Dalia May. She is also survived by friends who became family as their lives were enriched by the joy she brought to all who knew her. A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 12, 2016, at Northwest Presbyterian Church, 4300 Northside Drive NW, Atlanta, GA. 30327. Flowers may be sent to Northwest Presbyterian Church, at the address above. Memorial gifts may be made to the Marthe Wolff Memorial Fund at Northwest Presbyterian Church.

Too the Ballance family. My heart is ever so heavy this morning as I realized that Marthe passed away last year. I know her soul is flying high and smiling brightly with God. She was such a light to the world. When I first met her in the United Training Center, my roommate, I knew she was a life liver. A light on this earth. My heart tears up today for your family even though it's been over a year. Sending you all hugs of love and may the happiest of memories of your "star" live in your hearts forever. God Bless.

Mark, August and the entire Ballance Family-
We are heartbroken by the news of Marthe's passing, and we continue to pray that the Lord veils you in His comfort and peace as you grieve. I'll continue to remember Marthe for her adventurous, caring and fun loving spirit rather than what ALS did to her body. She was just so much fun to be around and always seemed to brighten up any room or situation she was in. If those of us that Marthe touched are able to live that same way, we will be able to keep her memory alive and make the world a much better place, just like she did.

I was so sorry to hear about Marthe this week from Todd. I remember so
many active crazy Marthe moments from childhood, like her screaming
and pointing at my instant oatmeal bowl when we found a worm (or 5) in
it -- and it was my second bowl so Marthe looked at me with the
horrified realization and said, "you just ate worms Julie." I still
gag thinking about it. Had Marthe not been examining my oatmeal bowl I
would have consumed more and more worms, so I thank her for her astute
ways of noticing things that move in food. She was such a sweet funny
bouncing kid and I really loved the woman she turned into as well --
we had such a nice time at your wedding of all places reconnecting.
Anyway please know that the entire Ballance clan are in my thoughts
and I am so so sorry to hear about sweet Marthe's passing. I can't
imagine how difficult these past few years have been for all of you
guys. Hope to see you soon in Atlanta one day. We are there for a week
this August.

And please send my love to Laura Nell too and your mom dad and Harry.

Love,
Julie

Marthe was just simply the best. Mark, you have my greatest sympathy for this loss. I know she loved you I think from the moment she met you. She had a light and a grace that I've never met in any other person. She was fun, too. She taught my kids all about Freeze Tag and TV Tag when she wasn't pursuing her degrees. She was down for anything. She always looked for the best in everything and everyone. She was driven and determined. She was a joy. I'm so glad she had you, Mark, and I'm so glad she got to be a mom to August. I'm grateful for all the family and support she's had in the past few years. I'm grateful to have known her and been blessed by that knowing. Mark, Aunt Carol and Uncle Harry, Katie and Laura, there are no words. We love you.

I have had the honor and pleasure of knowing Marthe for 4 years. Marthe provided joy, love and wisdom to all that knew her. A true giver of life, hope, and honesty. My heart goes out to Marthe's husband Mark who fought this battle with Marthe with love, support and diligence beyond words. My heart goes out to sweet August who will miss out on the "Marthe experience," but fortunately has Mark as a wonderful father and along with friends and family, will keep Marthe's spirit alive. My sympathies to Marthe's parents, siblings, family and the many friends who will miss the Marthe spirit. Marthe hoped that the living could live with with the joy she lived with even as she was dying. I hope we can honor Marthe and be joyful each day.
