Family-Placed Death Notice
RICHARD EDWARD McDOWELL Richard Edward McDowell, age 87 of Marietta, Georgia died March 24, 2007 at his home following a long battle with heart problems. He was born in Jarrett, Virginia on April 26, 1919, the son of the Rt. Rev. William George McDowell, Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Alabama, and Mary Meade Phelps McDowell. Richard began his flying career in 1940 with Southern Airways Company, where he obtained his commercial flying license with an instructor's rating. After obtaining his license he moved with Southern Airways to Anderson, SC where he was an Instructor Pilot for the Cadets at Clemson. Later he flew for Trans World Airlines out of Los Angeles, CA and Kansas City, MO. About that time Pearl Harbor was bombed and WWII began. Richard was drafted and served as a Civilian Flight Commander for the 65th US Army Air Corps based with Southern Airways in Decatur, AL. Then again in 1955 he served as a Flight Commander with the US Army Air Corps, Bainbridge Air Base, Bainbridge, GA. He was later grounded for health reasons but stayed in aviation, his true passion in life, moving to Atlanta with Southern Airways to work as a Flight Control Supervisor. Southern Airways merged with Republic Air Lines and he moved to Minneapolis, MN. Later Republic was bought by Northwest Airlines. He retired from Northwest Airlines December 31, 1981 ending a 41 year career in aviation. Richard was a member of St. Peter and St. Paul Episcopal Church in Marietta, GA. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William G. McDowell and his first wife, Frances Cook McDowell. Survived by his wife of 41 years, Virginia (Ginny) McDowell; son Richard, his wife Kathy, son Robert and his wife Sandy, all of Acworth, Georgia; step-son Gary Seibert and wife Barbara of Franklin, Tennessee; granddaughters Donna McDowell Luster and Holly Seibert; grandsons, Steven and Scott McDowell, Matthew and Nicholas Seibert, Henry and Troy Ryckeley; great-granddaughter Madison Luster and great grandson, Mason Luster. Survivors also include his sister Mary Meade and husband Pierre Ullman of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; a brother Alan of Richmond, Virginia; a brother Douglas and his wife Anne of Stuart, Florida; and brother, John and wife Alda of Birmingham, Alabama as well as host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, March 26, 2007 at St. Peter and St. Paul Episcopal Church, 1795 Johnson Ferry Rd. Marietta, GA 30062. The family will receive friends one hour prior at the church. Graveside and interment services will be at 12:00 noon (CST) on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, AL. Memorial donations maybe made to St. Peter and St. Paul Episcopal Church (Folders) or to the American Heart Association. Arrangements by H.M.
