Edgar Kopp Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

KOPP, Edgar DR. EDGAR NEAL KOPP On March 28th E. Neal Kopp succumbed to ALS and left us to join his beloved wife Emma Jane with whom he had shared 54 wonderful years. Neal was born on August 24, 1933 in Danville, Pennsylvania to Edgar and Pauline Kopp. He grew up in Tower City, Pennsylvania graduating 1st of 19 from Tower City High School. It was in Tower City where he met the love of his life, Emma Jane, whom he married in 1953. Neal attended Franklin & Marshall for pre-dental and graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry in 1957. Neal enlisted in the Army while in dental school, and served in the Army 27 years living in Washington D.C.; Atlanta, GA (on several occasions); Poitiers, France; Denver, CO; Arlington, VA; Augsburg, Germany and Augusta, GA. Neal retired from the Army in 1980 as a Colonel and Commander of Dental Activity and Director, Dental Education at Fort Gordon, GA. In 1976 Neal was awarded the Surgeon Generals "A" Prefix in Specialty Area of Fixed Prosthodontics, the Army Medical Department's highest award for professional excellence. Following the Army, Neal joined the faculty of Emory University School of Dentistry in 1980 as Associate Professor, Acting Director of Clinics, and then Director of Clinics and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs between 1982 and 1988. Neal then went into private practice in Sandy Springs, GA where he continued to work until just before his death. Neal has held prominent positions in academia; and participated in the development of fixed prosthodontics and modern implant dentistry. Neal was a member of the Society of American Prosthodontics in Europe and the International Congress of Oral Implantologist with Fellowship and Diplomat status since 2000. He had lectured in Europe and America, and was the co-founder and Assistant Director of the ICOI Implant Team Seminar Group and mentor to Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons, Periodontists and General Practitioners in the Specialty of Prosthodontics and Dental Implantology on an ongoing basis. Neal enjoyed traveling with Emma Jane to Chicago, New Orleans, North Carolina, Orlando and Myrtle Beach and with his children camping from California to Maine. He was an avid golfer and his good humor and frequent jokes will be missed on the course. He was never too busy to help a friend, student, co-worker or child in need. He enjoyed a quality wine and an exquisite meal, and insisted on others enjoying all life has to offer with him. Neal was a man who lead by example whether it be as Colonel in the Army, mentor to dental students, coach of girls softball (Metro Atlanta Champs!), and as a husband, father and friend. His true calling was as a teacher of life. He showed us how life should be lived with honor, joy and humor. As Monty Python sings, Neal could "Always look on the bright side of life"... and if you know the song perhaps you'll smile and whistle appropriately...and if not simply look to heaven and raise a toast to Neal and a life lived as well as any man could. To honor his memory we should all endeavor to do the same. As he wrote in this past year's Christmas card, he had a good run... Neal is survived by his son, Steven N. Kopp; his daughter, Kathy E. Kopp-Misiak and her husband John A. Misiak; and his grandson, Iain N. Kopp. Memorial service will be held Friday, April 4, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 4882 LaVista Road, Tucker, GA. In lieu of flowers the family requests any donations be made to the St. Andrews Extending Program or the Humane Society. Arrangements by Bill Head Funeral Homes and Crematory, Lilburn/Tucker Chapel. 770-564-2726

I only knew Dr. Kopp about 3 years, and can't say I knew too much about him, but I do know that he enjoyed life. I know that he was a dispenser of wisdom and a laugh-a-minute kind of guy. He snored loudly and loved fully. It's hard now, to say that there were times when I hadn't spoken kindly to him in the past, but he does have my respect. He and his wife have both left lasting impressions. My best wishes to their family.

My sincere sympathy to the Kopp family on your loss. I was one of Dr. Kopp's patients and will always remember him as a caring and concerned dentist. I was afraid of having a dental implant procedure and his wonderful humor took away my fear. I will miss him.

I had the pleasure of working with DR. kopp for ten years. When i first went to work for him i was scared because i knew he was an army colonel. He took me to lunch the first day and told me we would always get along if i always had fresh burs, kept the operatory clean and took very good care of the paitents. He and i had a great relationship, he was like a father to me and taught me so much about dentistry . Dr. Kopp and Emma jane were such special people. I will miss him very much.

I was only a patient of Dr. Kopp's for about 2 years, but I have tremendoues respect for him as a dentist and as a person. I wish I could have had a dentist like him for the period of my life before I started going to him. I probably would not have had the dental problems that I had. Iwill miss him as my dentist and as someone I had great respect for.

My deepest sympathy to the family in their loss of both parents in a short period of time. I have fond memories of a camping trip with the whole family, including the dog. We always had a good time when I visited them. Neal took me to see the sights of Georgia as well as sharing his exquisite meals, both outside and at home with the family. I am a cousin who will miss him for his love of life and sense of humor.

I loved him like a father, he was a father to all his softball girls. He always treated us all just like his own daughter and I will truly miss this wonderful man. We all grew up with him as our coach and I am very thankful he was in my life and in all of the members of the team. He not only coached us all for so many years and he has touched all our lives in so many ways. He taught us all what it takes to be a team and to take pride in ourselves no matter what. The world has really lost a great leader and friend.

I first became a patient of Dr. Kopp's back in the early 80's at Emory; he saved my self image. For 20+ years he always greeted me by my maiden name (because that's how he first knew me), "scolded" me for the red wine that was staining my teeth, and shared his favorite restaurant find since our last visit. What a wonderful man...heaven is rejoicing to have him home!

I will never forget Dr. Kopp.
I worked with him 2004 -2006.
He was the same age as my father. He treated me as his daughter, he showed me many interesting things in dentistry. I will never believe that I will never see him again.

I loved Dr. Kopp. As a Student of his from 1980-1984, and then his patient, and a referring Dentist, he was my hero. I could alway go to him for help, advise or treatment when ever I needed it. He will alway be in my mind and heart as a fun loving person and a mentor to me.
