Family-Placed Death Notice
DURHAM, Betty Betty Durham of St. Simons Island died Sunday, August 3, at Southeast Georgia Health System after an extended illness. Betty was born in Plains, Georgia, October 26, 1925. She was the daughter of James Henry Glawson and Luna Howe Glawson. A lifelong resident of Georgia, she grew up in several cities throughout the state and moved to Atlanta in 1943 where she met and later married Estes Durham and they raised their family. Betty attended Georgia Southwestern College and worked for 25 years as an administrative assistant at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Among her many responsibilities was organizing the annual Course of Studies School for Methodist ministers throughout Georgia. Besides being with her family, Betty loved to read, watch classic movies, and garden. She was a good cook who especially enjoyed making desserts. Her sons well remember the chocolate cakes she baked each Sunday, and her special cakes highlighted many family birthdays and gatherings. Betty was a quiet, gentle woman. Her kind face, shining blue eyes, and ready smile drew people to her. She was generous with her time and encouragement and had a great capacity for listening to the concerns of others. Preceding her in death are her husband, Estes Durham, her grandson, James Anthony (Tony) Durham, and her brother-in-law, Daniel Ferguson Brewster. She is survived by her son Estes Randolph (Randy) Durham of St. Simons Island, Ga., his daughter, Kathryn (Katie) Marie Durham, and Katie's mother, Cynthia (Cindy) Wall Durham, both of Atlanta; and by her son James Benjamin (Jim) Durham, his wife, Kathleen Bergen Durham, and their daughters, Rebecca Glawson Durham and Sarah Bergen Durham, all of St. Simons Island, Ga.; and her sister, Helen Glawson Brewster, of St. Simons Island, Ga. Betty was a member of St. Simons United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Her funeral service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Simons United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour beforehand. A reception at the church will follow the service. Internment will be Friday 2 p.m. at Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker, Ga. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be sent to the St. Simons United Methodist Church Building Fund, 624 Ocean Boulevard, St. Simons Island, Ga, 31522, or to the United Methodist Children's Home, 500 South Columbia Dr., Decatur, Ga., 30030.
