Family-Placed Death Notice

JARRAD, George GEORGE TRUETT JARRARD George Truett Jarrard, of Newnan, died Tuesday, December 16, 2008. He was born August 5, 1918 to educators Cicero Jason Jarrard and Mary Cain Jarrard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Irma Gill Jarrard. Mr. Jarrard was a graduate of North Georgia College and Georgia Southern University. He received his master's degree from Mercer University and an Education Specialist degree from the University of Georgia. His career in education administration included 39 years in the public schools of Georgia with 10 years as system superintendent of the Screven County schools in Sylvania, GA. The last 10 years of his career were with the Georgia Department of Education where he served as Director of Regional Educational Services for metro Atlanta school systems. Mr. Jarrard held numerous educational leadership positions including those with the Georgia Education Association, representative to the National Education Association, and member of the executive committee of the Georgia High School Association. While in Sylvania, Mr. Jarrard served as president of the Rotary Club, chairman of the board of the Sylvania First Methodist Church, as well as chairman of the Pastor Parrish Relations Committee. For retirement Mr. Jarrard, with his wife, chose Newnan where he remained active in civic affairs including the Newnan Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He served as chairman of the Newnan Tree Commission and as advisor to the commission for the Newnan Streetscapes Project of 2002. He was a member of Newnan First United Methodist Church where he served on numerous committees. He continued to serve on the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation Committee until his death. Mr. Jarrard was a Certified Master Gardener in Coweta County and during retirement followed an avocation as a horticulturist specializing in exotic plants and flowers. He was an avid traveler and visited sites around the world. He was a voracious reader and a sports enthusiast, learning snow skiing at the age of 50. He had a special affinity for Georgia Football and North Carolina basketball. He is survived by a son, Dr. G. Truett Jarrard, Jr. & wife, Bonnie; a daughter, Dr. Mary Bess Jarrard Cole & husband, Dr. Geoffrey P. Cole of Athens, GA; four grandchildren, Julie Jarrard, Trey Jarrard & wife, Juliette, Jarrard Cole, MacKinsey Cole; three great-grandchildren, Anna Rae Jarrard, Alexandra Jarrard, Reese Jarrard; and brother, Clisby W. Jarrard of Franklin, TN. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.mckoon.com. The funeral service is Friday, December 19, 2008 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with Dr. Gene Tyre and Rev. Gary Parrish officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The visitation is Thursday evening between 5:30 & 7:30 pm at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St, Newnan, GA 30263.
