LEYBURN, Boyd, Jr. BOYD HARLAN LEYBURN JR. Boyd Harlan Leyburn, Jr. died June 5th, 2009 of pulmonary fibrosis at St. Joseph's Hospital, Atlanta. He is survived by his wife of 51 years Diane Dewey Leyburn of Palm Beach Florida, their two children; a son, Boyd III (wife Connie Garrett Leyburn and sons Drew and Adam), Atlanta, and a daughter, Tree Leyburn Wright (Devon Lloyd Wright), Los Angeles. Boyd is also survived by his sister Alice Thomas (Major David Thomas) of Millbrook, AL. Boyd was born on May 18, 1931 in Rome, GA. In 1932 his family moved to Montgomery, AL and in 1937 to Millbrook, AL. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1948, received a BA in Economics from Washington and Lee University in 1952, where he was a Pi Kappa Alpha. He entered University of Alabama Law School, but was called to active duty in the U.S. Navy before completing his first semester. Boyd spent over three years in the Navy serving on the USS Lowry (DD 770). Upon release from active duty he remained in the Naval Reserve, retiring with the rank of Commander. He joined Sears in 1956 as a trainee in Orlando, FL and held several staff assignments in the Southeast before his appointment to store manager in Florence, AL in 1970. He went on to manage Sears stores in Atlanta (Buckhead) and Birmingham, AL before retiring in 1990. Boyd's business affiliations included Chambers of Commerce and Retail Associations on the local and state levels. In 1978 he was president of Atlanta's Buckhead Business Association. His civic activities included: Advisory Council Adult Rehabilitation Center of the Salvation Army, United Way, Boy Scouts Friends of Scouting, the Executive Service Corps of Birmingham and Kiwanis Clubs, Birmingham and Buckhead. He served as Deacon, Treasurer, Trustee and Elder at Independent Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, and since July 2005 served as Elder and later as Treasurer at Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church. Boyd was active in the Washington and Lee Alumni organization, having served as a class agent for four years. He was also active in the USS Lowry Association, attending reunions and serving as President for several years. Boyd was a member of the Board of Governors of Riverchase Country Club in Birmingham, where he played golf and tennis. In 2003, Boyd and Diane returned to Atlanta to be near family. Boyd enjoyed golf with the Senior Golfers of the Atlanta Area. Boyd's memorial service will be held Saturday June 13th 2pm at Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church, Atlanta; 3016 Lanier Drive NE, Atlanta, GA 30319. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church or the OPC Food Pantry.
