Family-Placed Death Notice

WILKINSON, Eugene EUGENE ANDERSON WILKINSON Eugene Anderson Wilkinson, of Roswell, formerly of Atlanta and Newnan, died quietly April 15, 2010 in hospice care at North Fulton Regional Hospital, a week after suffering a debilitating stroke He was 95. Mr. Wilkinson was born in Newnan in 1914 and lived there until a year after his graduation from high school there. He entered the Army in 1933 as a student in the West Point Prep. School and was accepted to the Point in 1935, but was discharged after the first year for deficiencies in math. It was the one great regret of his life and he maintained ties to his West Point classmates the rest of his life. He rejoined the Army in 1937 and served through 1946, taking flight training in the Air Corps in 1939-1940 and serving as a flight instructor at several fields in the southeastern US during World War II. After the war he was an agent for the Franklin Life Insurance Co., eventually having his own agency and winning several industry awards. He was proud to have been a Chartered Life Underwriter. He married the former Gertrude Cato Thompson, of Seale, Alabama, in 1940. They had a full and happy married life until her death in 1996. His second marriage, in 1998, was to Christiana Hemmi, née Latimer, of San Antonio, a former sweetheart from his high school days, another happy marriage which was cut short by Christi's death in 2004. Since that time he lived independently at home, supported by a circle of friends and neighbors. Mr. Wilkinson was active in the Presbyterian Church wherever he lived tor most of his life, serving as an elder in the Cascade Road Presbyterian Church in Atlanta in the 1960s. He is survived by his son, Amos Edward Wilkinson II of Oakland and several nieces, nephews and younger cousins. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.higgin shillcrestchapel.com. Graveside services will be held Monday April 19 at 2 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan with Dr. Harry Barrow officiating. The family will receive friends at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel in Newnan from 11 a. m, until the time of the funeral.
