Family-Placed Death Notice

WILBANKS, N.J. N. J. WILBANKS N. J. Wilbanks, age 78, of Canton, died on Friday May 28, 2010 at the Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta. He was founder and president of N.J. Wilbanks Contractor Inc. in 1957, a member and deacon of Oakdale Baptist Church, a Veteran of the Korean War with the 82nd Airborne. He was a member of the Jaycees in the late 50s and early 60s and was on their site selection committee for the proposed new Cherokee County Airport. He was instrumental in the donation of half the property for the airport. He was appointed to the airport committee to oversee the new airport after it was built. Mr. Wilbanks served as Chairman of the Cherokee County Airport Authority after it was created by the State Legislature in 1968. He was also the 1st Chairman of the Cherokee County Development Authority and the 1st Chairman of the Cherokee County Travel Commission. He was recently honored by the Cherokee County Airport Authority in the naming of the new Wilbanks-Sosebee Terminal Building. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday June 1, 2010 from Canton 1st Baptist Church with Dr. Pete Wilbanks, Dr. Floyd Falany, Rev. Dan Henderson, and Rev. Mike Ware officiating. Internment will follow in Cherokee Memorial Park. He was preceded in death by his father and mother Fred and Ina Wilbanks and brother Tilmon Wilbanks. Survivors include his wife Wava Gramling Wilbanks, Canton, sons and daughters-in-law; Chris and Dawn Wilbanks, Canton, Kip and Candy Wilbanks, Waleska, daughter, Denise Wilbanks, New York, NY., sisters and brothers-in-law, Freddie Hamrick, Jasper, Betty & Melvin Pitts, Athens, Lucy & Don West, Bent Tree, Linda & Jon Burch, Valdosta, 6 grandchildren Christa, Cody, Cydney, Holden, Porter, & Peyton Wilbanks along with several nieces and nephews. Flowers accepted or donations may be made to the Oakdale Baptist Church Bldg. Fund, 100 Oakdale Rd., Canton, GA 30114. The family will receive friends on Sunday and Monday from 1p.m. - 4p.m. & 6p.m. - 9p.m. and until funeral hour on Tuesday. South Canton Funeral Home and Chapel, Canton 770-479-3377.
