Family-Placed Death Notice

COOK, Charles CHARLES L. COOK Charles L. Cook, 76 of Atlanta, GA passed away February 12, 2011 of complications from lung cancer. Charles was born in Tampa, FL to the late Marcus A. Cook, Jr. and Dulcie DeFoor Cook. Shortly after Charles was born his family moved back to Atlanta, and became an Atlanta native for most of his life. He attended R.L. Hope Elementary School, North Fulton High School, and graduated Northside High School where he played football, and achieved notable success as a member of its championship Doubles Tennis Team with his close friend Judge Ron Powell of Geneva, FL. After a year at Vanderbilt University, he transferred to Georgia Tech where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Management in 1958. Subsequently while serving a two year hitch in the Army, he met, and married Margaret Elliott of Kansas City, MO. following his discharge in 1960 they moved to Atlanta, and he joined Atlantic Steel Company where he rose to National Sales Manager, and retired in 1985. During that tenure he and Margaret lived for a number of years in Birmingham, AL where they had their three children. Having surrendered his life to the Lord Jesus in earlier years, he was very active in his church Briarwood Presbyterian, and for recreation, was an avid golfer. He enjoyed dancing to the big band concert music of the 40's &50's. Charles is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Karen Richardson Cook; children Charles L. Cook, Jr., Helen Dulcie Cook Efaw, and Michael Howell Cook; grandchildren Ashley Rachel Efaw, Banks Howell Cook, Henley Grace Cook; step-sons Berlin B. Benfield, George Lester Benfield; step grandchildren Rebecca Rhea Benfield, Allison Yvonne Benfield, Baker Armstrong Benfield, and Emery Katherine Benfield; brother Marcus A Cook, III, and a number of nieces and nephews. Charles will greatly be missed by his family, and all who knew him. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Northside United Methodist Church, 2799 Northside Drive NW, Atlanta, GA. with Dr. G. Gil Watson officiating. The Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A private Interment service will follow at Arlington Memorial Park.
