Alice STEWART Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

STEWART, Alice ALICE CALDWELL STEWART Alice Caldwell Stewart, 58, died peacefully on April 15, 2012. She had lung cancer and was in the kind hospice care of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Atlanta. Alice was born in Pasadena, California and grew up in La Jolla, California and Boulder, Colorado. She received her B.A. in Philosophy from Wellesley College, studied philosophy at Dartmouth College and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, and earned her J.D. from Emory Law School. As an attorney in private practice for over 25 years, Alice devoted her career to helping the downtrodden. Her legal practice consisted primarily of representation of criminal defendants, both at trial and at the appellate level, as well as in post-conviction proceedings. She was known for taking difficult cases, regardless of a client's ability to pay. Crowned "Little Miss Charm" as a child, Alice exhibited a sparkling wit and keen intellect. In the week of her death, she was studying Greek. Alice delighted in small joys and deep friendships. In recent years she particularly enjoyed the community at Emory University's Cannon Chapel. Alice is survived by her mother, Rachel Whitesides Stewart, and two sisters, Jane Bowyer Stewart and Mary Marshall Stewart, all of Washington, D.C. Alice also leaves two nieces, Rebecca Stewart Balton and Helen Caldwell Sweeney, and two nephews, Timothy Stewart Balton and John Marshall Sweeney, and many close friends in Atlanta. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 6th, at 11:00 a.m. at Emory University's Cannon Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 760 Pollard Blvd. SW, Atlanta, Georgia, 30315. Arrangements by the Cremation Society of Georgia 404- 355-7627.
