Robert ASH Sr. Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

ASH, Robert, Sr. ROBERT L. ASH, SR. Mr. Robert L. Ash, Sr. age 90 of Smyrna, passed away Monday, November 12th. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, November 16th at Smyrna First Baptist Church with Dr. Steve Kimmel and Rev. Chuck Allen officiating. Interment will be in Cheatham Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Marietta. Cobb County lost one of its most respected educators with his passing. He was born in Telfair County on December 6, 1921 and died suddenly of cardiac arrest on November 12, 2012. Mr. Ash began his career in education after serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a teacher and basketball coach at Lawrenceville High School and after one year came to Fitzhugh Lee High School in 1947. He was there as teacher and basketball/baseball coach until the opening of Campbell High School where he assumed the same duties along with that of assistant principal in 1952. He was a successful coach taking numerous girls and boys teams to region championships and state tournaments. In 1954 Mr. Ash moved to Monroe, GA becoming principal of Monroe Area High School. He served there for 11 years and then came back to Cobb County as Principal of Campbell High School in 1965. His career in education spanned 43 years, 33 of which were as a high school principal. Mr. Ash was recognized as Principal of the Year in 1987 by the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders. He retired in 1987. One of his proudest accomplishments was seeing the success of students who came through his schools and being a mentor to many educational professionals. Mr. Ash was proud of his career in education, but his greatest love was his church and family. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Smyrna and spoke often of his love for their music programs and his Sunday School involvement. He was especially fond of participating in the Men's Prayer Group each week. He loved his family and was dedicated to his wife of 67 years, Carolyn Lord Ash, who preceded him in death in 2011. Mr. Ash took special joy in family gatherings at which he always took time to bring comments of faith and inspiration. A long time resident of Smyrna, Mr. Ash was the son of Mr. & Mrs. A. W. Ash of Jefferson. Robert L. Ash, Sr. is survived by son Robert L. Ash Jr. and wife Lynn, daughter Karen Frost and husband Eddie, grandchildren Laurie Beard (Brett) Julie Wilkie (Wes), Andrew Ash, Emily Bodden (Scott) Lindsey Mitchell (Bradford), Hannah Frost, great grandchildren, Bryson and Ashlyn Beard, Max Wilkie, Sawyer Bodden and Betsy Mitchell, sister Jean Gruhn of Gainesville, GA, and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Smyrna. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 P.M. Thursday, November 15th at Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna (770)435-4467.
