Family-Placed Death Notice
BROOKS, Barbara BARBARA MURPHY BROOKS Barbara Murphy Brooks, 78, of East Point, Georgia, died Tuesday, November 20, 2012, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born in Johnson City, TN on January 21, 1934, the daughter of Rush W. and Celma Davis Murphy. Having received her B.S. Degree from Florida State University and her MSW from Tulane University, Barbara served as a professional social worker in the child welfare field in Tampa, FL; as a faculty member at the University of Georgia School of Social Work; and as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for the Fulton County Department of Mental Health, from which she retired. Barbara, a nonjudgmental, free spirit with real insight and revealing honesty, lived every day on purpose and shared practical, down-to-earth ideas to help others do the same. Our Barbara loved to travel. Her sense of adventure took her to many parts of the world, including Europe, Asia, Central America and Australia. She knew how to cultivate and maintain lifetime friendships and enjoyed socializing with friends. She was an avid supporter of the arts, including the Atlanta Opera and the Horizon Theatre Company, as well as other organizations including the Sierra Club, the National Geographic Society, and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Even after she was diagnosed with cancer, she continued to enjoy life to the fullest, and became an example to others for her courage and determination. Preceded in death by her parents, she is survived by cousins Harlan Dean Booth and his wife Shirlene ("Cookie"), Nadine Barnett and Erma Walthour, all of Tennessee. She leaves behind many close friends, who will remember her loyalty, generosity, sense of humor, independent spirit and constant and beautiful light in this world. In accordance with her wishes, no memorial service is planned.
