Family-Placed Death Notice

BROOKS, Robert Robert Sidney Brooks, a resident of Charlotte, North Carolina since 1977 and most recently a resident of Pacifica Senior Living in Virginia Beach, Virginia, died on Saturday, December 15. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia on October 7, 1924 to Gene Gil Brooks and Hazel Collier Puckett Brooks, now deceased. His beloved wife, Margene Hester Brooks, preceded him in death on April 29, 1998. Mr. Brooks is survived by two daughters, Marguerite Eugenia Brooks, Pineville, North Carolina and Sophia Sydney Brooks Nolan, her husband CAPT Richard James Nolan, Jr., USN (ret.) and children, Corey Brooks Nolan and Richard Robert Nolan, of Norfolk, Virginia; brother, Gene Gil Brooks, Jr., and his wife Ila Watkins Brooks of Douglasville, Georgia; sister, Martha Brooks Thurman of Cartersville, Georgia; sister-in-law, Nancy Moore Hester of Tucker, Georgia; several nieces and nephews. His brother, William Thomas Brooks and sister, Mildred Joanne Brooks preceded him in death. Mr. Brooks attended Boys High School in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in Textile Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, in the class of 1949. He served in World War II as an aerial gunner in the 20th Army Air Force in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Brooks was the President of The Chemical Clearinghouse, Inc., Charlotte, North Carolina, which he founded in 1981. He was previously employed by Allied Chemical Corporation, Ciba Geigy Chemical Company, Harshaw Chemical Company and Crompton and Knowles Company. Mr. Brooks enjoyed the camaraderie of the game of golf and was previously a long-time member of Carmel Country Club. He was a charter member of Living Saviour Lutheran Church, Charlotte, North Carolina. He served as the Chairman of the church's Organizing Committee and was the Church Council's first President. Subsequently, Mr. Brooks served as Council President, Chairman of several standing committees and was an active member of the Personnel and Stewardship committees. He was a member of the Thursday Morning Men's Bible Class and enjoyed participating in the group's activities. The Lutheran Order for Burial of the Dead will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 21 at Living Saviour Lutheran Church in Charlotte, North Carolina and will be conducted by The Reverend J.A. Harbinson. Mr. Brooks will be interred at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 22 at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia. A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory Express condolences at ajc.com/obit
